Assistant Super Named in Regional District
West Morris Central, Mendham High Schools chief will have back up.
Robert Beers has been named as the West Morris Regional High School District's assistant superintendent.
The board of education voted unanimously for Beers, the then-assistant principal at West Morris Central High School, to be promoted to this role effective Feb. 1.
The position was created in May of 2012 with the primary "responsibility of providing leadership and vision to district-level programs in curriculum, supervision and evaluation, and professional development," Superintendent Mackey Pendergrast said in a statement to the community.
Beers taught history for 10 years and has been an assistant principal at both Central and Mendham High Schools, the statement said.
Beers' former position of assistant principal will not be filled, Pendergrast said, and each school will operate with two assistant principals.
When Pendergrast took over as superintendent in March 2012, his position of Director of Staff was not filled. At a recent board meeting, the district accepted the resignation of Dr. Alyce Hunter, a current assistant principal at Central and former Director of Curriculum in the district.

Why do we need more top heavy administration in the school system? Maybe the BOE will now decide that we need an assistant to the assistant superintendent!

Don't forget, Superintendent Mackey Pendegrast also added four supervisor positions last year @ $120,000 per year.
Just like the WT K-8, the superintendent is expanding high paying administration jobs at the expense of the taxpayer. Everyday is soak Mendham, Chester and Washington Twp taxpayers.

Prior to creating this new position, whose job was it to provide leadership and vision to district-level programs in curriculum, supervision and evaluation, and professional development? Or are those brand new needs, of which we only recently became aware?

The superintendent's, don't forget in the face of WT K- 8 enrollment dropping, this position is totally unnecessary, the tax payers are getting ripped-off!

I have never seen the job description for a superintendent, but I am not surprised by your reply, because I would have expected these things to be the normal duties for that role. So if you are correct, this begs the question: What other duties is the superindent finding himself needing to perform that are preventing him from being able to perform these particular tasks? I assume that the board should be able to justify such a decision and expenditure to the taxpayers, correct?
Thomas Lotito

Yes, the BOE will justify this expense. I can't wait to hear Regional BOE president Jackie Schram's justification/excuse for this expense and position. After all they know better then we mere mortals. (sarcasm)
Digressing to your earlier point, I don't know what the duties of a superintendent are. However, the former superintendent Dr. Batissta managed with out an assistant superintendent. It seems that the new superintendent is walling himself up in an ivory tower at the taxpayers expense. Seems like the there's some sort of high paying job-grab going on in our schools.

For clarification, Tom - Jacke Schram is not the board president or vice president in 2013.
Also, under Superintendent diBatista, there was a director of staff (Pendergrast) and a director of curriculum (Hunter), with no assistant superintendent. Those positions are now gone (as specified in the story).
Thanks for the comments.

Excuse me Jason, Jacke Schram was quoted defending these positions in the Observer- Tribune. Doesn't matter what her position was. I'm not a reporter.
However, Penderast did create new district supervisor positions along with the Assistant. Administrator's job. @ 120,000 ea. I was told there are 4. ( that's an expansion)
Pendergahst plan was criticized by his peers because he FALIED TO present it to the public.
William Nossin of Old Bridge, a member of the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association. said.
“To be frank, what I heard is most troubling. In other districts, with something like this, the superintendent has made a presentation as to what it would look like, the concepts and how it would improve the district,” said Nossin. “You’ve made no presentation and yet you ask for questions. You just voted on it. How is that answering properly to the people who elected you?”
Pendergrast slammed this down the throats of the taxpayer with out a presentation. It passed the BOE by a 5-4 vote. and Jacke Schram supported it.
After a closed, executive session that lasted nearly two hours on Monday, April 16, the board approved a plan creating an assistant superintendent’s position and district supervisors for content and technology integration.
And try to keep your board trolls like Sam Slobo focused on the story instead of me for a change. PEACE!

I've deleted any comment that doesn't pertain to the article, which is about the appointment of Robert Beers as the district's assistant superintendent. Going forward, I'll continue to do so.
Let's keep it civil, folks. Thanks.

Here is another example of Tom Lotito playing loose with the facts and making yet another overreach. After stating Jacke Schram was the regional board president, he was corrected by Jason. Tom reply was predictable:
"Jacke Schram was quoted defending these positions in the Observer- Tribune. Doesn't matter what her position was."
I defended the recent tax increase on people who make over $400K. I guess this makes me President of the United States?

Kevin, who said: From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs?

I wish those of you who are busy bashing the district while admitting you don't know what the Sulerintendents job description is, would get your facts straight before lashing out. West Morris ELIMINATED two district supervisor positions before creating the Assisitant Superintendent job, thus creating flexibility for the district, support for curriculum and evaluation and saving taxpayers more than one former salary as well as benefits. The same applies to the content supervisors. There were formerly lead teachers at each school in each subject area. Now the new positions are shared between both schools, again creating efficiencies for the district and savings for the taxpayers.
So before anyone starts labeling brilliance as incompetence, get your facts straight. Go to a board meeting, research the district's web site, ask board members for information, and check with the Department of Education. There are many sources of information out there, so please do your homework.

Christen, you didn't approve hiring of 4 NEW supervisors @ 120,000? And you didn't RUSH the assistant superintendent's position without a presentation to the public past the BOE with Jacke Schram.leading the charge? The information came from your BOE and then was published in the newspapers
Or maybe William Nossen, of the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association is a basher too?
You were a tax and spender.on the school board and you don't like the TRUTH getting out about your agenda on the BOE.Your support of the malevolent Kevin Nedd is an embarrassment to you. Peace and be well.
Thomas Lotito

BTW Christen, while your at it, why don't you explain how you gave former BOE member John Notte a thirty five dollar an hour job WITHOUT advertising it to the public? If you had advertised you could have gotten someone for $10-$15 an hour.
You call the position a "facilities monitor." Translated: A "facilities monitor is someone who stand around in the parking lot with his hands in pocket at the tax payers expense.

Of course Tom provides no facts to back up his allegations. Tom loves to cite local newspapers as his authority for his rantings. Unlike Cristen and yours truly, he can't cite the years he served as an elected official as the groundings or basis of his opinions. The one time he chose to crawl from under a rock and put his name in the hat, he couldn't muster 46 votes from a town with over 12 thousand registered voters. How sad.

Cristen - I would love to see a listing of the current education positions in the school district (above teachers) and the job descriptions of each...you mention numerous places to find information, but THESE details are hard to find. I think the lack of understanding the roles/need for ALL these positions, combined with the $100K+ salary of each, leads to tax-payer frustration/anger. I would MUCH appreciate a link if possible.

Maria: Cristen moved out of state last year and is no longer on the BOE. Perhaps you might want to go to a board meeting and request the information there from the current board of education.

I'm badly confused here about the rules. If this guy Nedd is going to constantly say that we ougha listen to his special insight because he was once elected by the town, why was it censored when I pointed out that the local paper printed the following? Is this guy given special rules because he writes a left wing columkn here?
Printed in the local paper in 2009:
*To remind your readers, this is the same Kevin Nedd who was thrown out of office in November in Long Valley by the largest margin in the history of thousands of Morris County municipal races going back two centuries. As they showed at the polls in their unprecedented landslide vote, Long Valley is sick of Kevin Nedd and his crass, coarse, vulgar behavior. *
if someone is going to repeat/repeat/repeat that he was once elected, it is to the point that he was rejected by his behavior in office by a historicat recrod number for the whole county ever. Even if he works at The Patch.

A few comments on the above:
1. I don't work for The Patch.
2. I do have "special" insight because I did serve as an elected official in our town.
3. My re-election defeat had nothing to do with my "behavior", otherwise 3400 would not have voted in my favor; try factoring in my principled decision to run as a Democrat (having won previously as an Independent) in a township where both McCain and Romney beat the President by some 30 percentage points as a true indicator of my doomed chances.
4. The quoted comments were authored by Tom Lotito in a OT letter to the Editor. Enough said.

Democrats have no principles, look at the corrupt politicians they elect and keep in office:The Clintons, Obama Reid, Pelosi, Corizine, Menendez, Sharpe James.et al.
Kevin FYI, your election defeat has EVERTHING to do with your behavior, you need to demonize someone in order to make yourself feel better and you don't know how to make friends outside your circle of ideologues
This causes you to argue with anyone who challenges you, not to mention the constant obsessive personal attacks. Politics is consensus, not dictatorship.

Tom,
Do you ever think before you post?
1. The who's who list of bad GOPers is never ending: Janklow, Hinshaw, Tonry, Lukens, Kelly, Hansen, J. F. Hastings, Swindall, Packwood, Konnyu, Livingston, Peterson, Calvert, Barr, Gingrich, DeLay, Cunningham, Durenberger, Rowland, Vitter, etc.
2. If "bad behavior" was the reason for my not winning re-election, please explain why my vote count increased from 2700 plus to over 3400 votes when comparing my second campaign to my first? Bad behavior would have resulted in less votes, not more.
3. I don't engage in personal attacks. I state the facts and let the chips fall where they fall. Like the fact you rely on hard working taxpayers like me to subsidize your existence, because your standard of living is so low you can’t afford a house that requires you to pay property taxes covering what the town and school district spends on your behalf.

@KNA - Thanks for the message. Just to be clear, Kevin Nedd - no one on this thread, for that matter - works for Patch (except me). Second, I've been deleting comments on this thread evenly on messages not pertaining to the topic at hand. Because I or another Patch editor may not get to it as quickly as some would like doesn't mean it won't be done. Our primary job is not to babysit the comments section, nor should it be.
Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts. Let's please keep them on topic and above board.
