Cops: Driver Was Drunk When Car Caught Fire

The following information was provided by the Washington Township Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Long Valley man was driving while intoxicated when his car was overtaken by flames Monday afternoon, Washington Township Police said.

Police received a call of a vehicle fire on Schooley’s Mountain Road in the area of Minebrook Golf Course, Lt. Doug Compton said. Officer Robert Brobst responded to the area near 315 Schooley’s Mountain Road and found Wayne Mohr’s vehicle fully engulfed, Compton said.

Video and photos of the car fire can be seen here.

A subsequent investigation revealed Mohr was traveling south on Schooley’s Mountain Road, and for unknown reasons crossed over into the northbound lane and struck a guide rail, Compton said. Mohr’s car continued back into the southbound lane before breaking down on the shoulder where it caught fire, Compton said.

Mohr, 45, was not in the vehicle and was uninjured, police said. When Brobst spoke with Mohr, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath, and requested he conduct a field sobriety test, Compton said.

Mohr failed the test and was placed under arrest, Compton said. Mohr was taken to police headquarters, where authorities learned he also had an outstanding warrant from Union Township Municipal Court in the amount of $750, Compton said.

Firefighters from Schooley’s Mountain Fire Company extinguished the blaze on Mohr’s vehicle.

Mohr was charged with failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, and driving while intoxicated. He was released on his own recognizance from Union Township Municipal Court, and released to an adult by Washington Township Police.

It seems that on a weekly basis we hear of someone driving drunk in Washington Twp, and often they are town residents. The fact that these idiots put our families at risk is very upsetting.

Seems they are just following examples put forth by some of the township's political leaders and their offspring.

@KMN....I tend to doubt that politicians and/or their offspring is on the forefront of people's minds at all times. I know you take a lot of heat on this site but that is rather arrogant and just plain silly.

My comment was relevant to the one I responded to.

With respect to driving drunk within the township, there have been documented cases of politicians and their offspring setting a bad example. If hearing the truth bothers you, so be it.

As for taking heat, it's nothing I can't handle. My georgous views of downtown Honolulu remain the same.

There are a few ex-committee men in this town whose behavior I would not emulate… but decorum keeps me from mentioning them by name.

It's a shame that political agendas & personal history takes precedence to & attempts to distract from the point here. This was one of at least two accidents that occured within a 3 mile radius of my home just yesterday. I don't know the details of the second, but whether drunk, sober, texting, distracted or in a rush, this is serious & of concern to many of us.

Nicole,

There is no attempt to use political agenda or personal history to distract from the point. The point is clear. Drunk driving is a problem in our community. But guess what, it's been a problem for quite some time that impacts everyone including political figures, their wives, and in some cases, their children. If you want something done about it, start at the top. We could easily pass an ordinance increasing fines and penalties. What do you think is stopping us from doing so?

You live and work in Honolulu now so our community is no longer of your concern. Enjoy your view.

@ Stacie:

I still own a home in the community, so for a long as I am writing checks payable to "Washington Township", our community will remain a concern. Try not to be so presumptuous next time.

Kevin, still can't get over his epic 2008 loss and conviction for harassment. Hopefully he'll take stacie's advice and keep himself out of court again.

Losing reelection as a Democrat in a township where McCain got north of 60% of the vote is hardly worth losing sleep over. It was a blessing that ultimately allowed the acceptance of an executive position affording a fantastic corner office view of Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. As for my petty offense, it makes for "good story" at cocktail parties. Besides, it's not like I was convicted of a more serious crime along the lines of federal tax evasion, drunk driving, or violently assaulting a public sector worker who banged a loved one.

KMN,
Ok, but then why the immediate reference to people "just following examples put forth by some of the township's political leaders and their offspring" as opposed to a relevant (allbeit ineffective) suggestion regarding ordinances that increase fines & penalties?? I highly doubt that while contemplating getting behind the wheel after drinking anyone is giving a second thought to the actions of LV's politicians. Stretching the phrase "under the influence" a bit, don't you think???

Because it doesn't help when those in a position to pass laws meant to protect us are the worst offenders. It's kinda like former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry telling kids not to do drugs. Not much credibility there!

Do they import those sour grapes special for you?! Why insult an entire state because of some bad blood in a town you no longer occupy? Like I said, a shame to not stick to the point of the article & the essence of the first comment.

I'm not hating on NJ, just stating a fact. From the Governor on down, there is a lot more drama (e.g., crap) in NJ than there is in Hawaii. Now if you ladies want to make a big deal out of it, that's your problem.
