Approximately 30 riders took part in the Long Valley Ride for Silence on Wednesday, May 18, to commemorate cyclists who have been injured or killed while riding. The five mile course took riders from Cycle Craft on West Mill Road up Schooley's Mountain Road, onto Fairview Avenue, then to Naughright Road and finally onto Rt. 513, ending in the downtown section of Long Valley.
Put together by the David D. Hammar Foundation, the Long Valley event was just one of thousands across the world, as the Ride of Silence began in 2003, and is held each year on the third Wednesday of May.
The David D. Hammar Foundation, started in January of 2007 by Allison Hammar after her father died from brain trauma suffered in a cycling accident, has been raising money for biking helmets and to help spread awareness of safe riding. The foundation is hosting the 2nd Annual Tour de Long Valley on July 31, which includes two 40-mile courses for riders to choose from. For more information on that event, go here.
