JCP&L to Target School Areas for Power Friday

Mayor says to be wary of utility provider's information.

As Day 11 post-Hurricane Sandy begins in Washington Township, Jersey Central Power & Light says it has heard residents loud and clear.

Despite the utility provider's power outage map stating there were still 2,182 residents in the dark Friday morning, a conversation between Mayor Ken Short and Director of External Affairs for First Energy Jeff Elser Thursday night revealed a game plan of sorts to end the work week.

"I asked Mr. Elser for the absolute truth as to power restoration in Washington Township," Short said in a letter to residents Thursday night. "As I have learned, the information provided comes directly from JCP&L, and is not always correct."

Elser's outline of power restoration to Short is as follows:

There will be supervisory crews on Bartley Road and Naughright Road (Thursday night) analyzing the damages to provide for active work crews on Friday. The Chester circuit #17540 serves Old Farmers Road School as well as the Middle School. There will be crews working on that circuit (Friday). This will allow for power restoration to East Mill Road and residents in the Capital Estates section of the Township. These are considered as quarantine circuit which means the crews keep working until completion of power.

The WMCHS (circuit #17541) which runs off the Chester Sub-station, currently has crews working and will continue working throughout tomorrow. These crews will be working the entire circuit.  This means that they will not stop at the High School, but continue beyond. This, hopefully, will bring the Coleman Road, Ridgeline, Chancellor Way, Bartley, Fairview Avenue, Ranney Road and Squire Roads to restoration of power.

The circuit that feeds Cuccinella School (circuit #17100) is a dual circuit that provides power from the Drakestown Sub-station as well as the Newburgh Road Sub-station. The supervisory crew has been on site (Thursday night) assessing the damages. Crews will muster at the Draketown Sub-station (Friday morning) and work towards restoration of Cuccinella School on Friday. The reopening of Naughright Road should happen on Friday.

Power will also probably be restored to the Nestling Pines Sub-division, Warwick Estates, Cambridge Estates, The Woods, as well as the Mission Road area.

Please remember that these are statements from JCP&L that have not been accurate in the past. This is the best information that I have available at this time and am relying totally on information provided by JCP&L. There was also a conference call (Thursday) which provided an update from JCP&L. The JCP&L President Lynch made a statement that everyone will have full restoration of power by the end of the weekend with the exception of several “spot” outages. I have also been advised that an additional 1,200 workers have arrived in NJ and will be “in the field” on Friday.

In addition, I have also been advised that there is no shortage of parts, transformers or utility poles.

I can't help but feel that there has been a complete lack of leadership and preparedness. Watching our elected officials take a wait and see approach and being fed propaganda by JCP&L is just not cutting it. We deserve to be provided relaible information (this update is a step in the right direction-better late than never), and should really work on a contingency plan so that we are not completely helpless. Being w/o power for 11 days is one thing, but having no plan as to how to reopen schools after 2 weeks is completely unacceptable. Our mayor and TC memebers need to step up and attempt to be more proactive and make a better effort to keep township residents fully informed.

Why were JCP&L trucks near the shore instead of restoring power to their customers? Why don't you ask them that? I suggest a class action lawsuit against them. We are treated worse than 3rd world countries here.

May be its time for people to come together and boycott JCP$NL, the town should look for other alternatives for power supply, its about time to hit them where it hurts most, their pocket, seems that is all they care about. Time to break the monopoly of power supply. Mr. Mayor you were just reelected your job is to look out for the town, you should invite other power companies to bid on power supply , unless you have friends at JCP$NL.

This is the first substantive update I have seen from our municipal leadership since the storm. Updates like this have been posted to Facebook multiple times per day by the mayors of Mt Olive and Mt Arlington, and I am sure others, since the day after the storm. My gripe is not my own lack of power - I'll deal with it, many are much worse off. My gripe is the complete lack of communication from our municipal leaders, including the TC and the BOE. 12-13 days out we finally have some detail. The next question is, why in the world were the schools not prioritized sooner? Seems like the TC is just waking up & realizing people need INFORMATION. Meanwhile, Mayor Short is speaking on WRNJ radio & mailed a letter ot residents yesterday by snail mail. That's all well and good, but those are not the primary ways people get their info. Why in the world not use Facebook and twitter to reach people with instant updates? It's very shortsighted & is letting the Twp down. And I don't blame our mayor/TC or BOE for JCPL's shortcomings. There's plenty of time when this is over to blast JCPL for its ineptitude. I know & respect Mayor Short. But here he and his colleagues have dropped the ball. Big time.

Mr. Westrick: As the former chairman of the Washington Township Reublican Organization it seemd like you have forgotten the golden: No matter what happens, you can never, never, never constructively criticize any township republican official unless they are a BOE member. If you do, you will incur the infinite wrath of Short, Gregg, Lotito, Jones and their republican pals ad infinitum. Good luck to you and keep speaking out. The truth obviously hurts.

I have to drive under 2 trees suspended in the air on Springtown and a wire swooping across the road on Zellers with a transformer about the fall to get home. I hold my breath every time I drive under them. If it weren't for my husband and some other neighbors and the 4-5 trees they cut down themselves, no one would be able to get out of their homes. Even if JCP&L can't help, surely the town can get rid of these trees!! I am disgusted!

JCP&L are liars. A friend spoke to someone "assessing" the damage at Naughright and Arrowhead on MONDAY! (the third time someone was assessing it in a week, by the way - we live right there) They told him that it will take 3-4 days for power to be restored to that section due to heavy damage (phone, cable and electric are out). He said the soonest they would be out there would be Saturday, but with the storm coming it would be more like Sunday. So add 3-4 days to Sunday and that area will have power. This is also the main power source for Cucinella and as of 10 am, my husband said no trucks are there working on it. So I highly doubt we will have power there by tonight, let alone this weekend... They are just blowing smoke up our a$$.....

What about people who are part of a cluster of 8-10 houses that have no power like the residents of Pine way and Woodland Ave. JCPL restored part of the power to that section and now is ignoring the rest of the residents. This is unacceptable! I also agree with the comments from Chris Westrick. We need to see leadership from our town officials from day 1 not day 11.

You want information, Chris? Here's your tweet: the power is out. Sucks. It's an unprecedented natural disaster in New Jersey. The people charged with bringing the grid back up aren't going through the process by deciding on the angriest mayor. My guess is that JCPL is learning over the last week that saying nothing is better than breaking promises or giving guesstimations that wind up infuriating local officials who get caught passing it along to their residents who are quite naturally clamoring for data.

Rather than throw little political stones, Chris, why don't you consider doing your little tweeting around and aiding the fund for the four children of the Blue Crest Farm owners, two of whom were in the backseat of the car when a tree fell on it, killing their parents in front of their eyes. There are more important things in life than whether you had to read the OT yesterday or listen to the radio or whatever to find out the obvious -- your power will come back on when it does, and the JCPL people tasked with it have lost a grip on guessing when right now.

Wow 1819- whoever you are behind your anonymous handle. Thanks for stating the obvious - this is an unprecedented disaster, which is why I am not complaining about my power being out, because many have much bigger problems. Casting political stones? If that's what you call holding our public servants accountable to keep the citizens informed, so be it. The leaders of neighboring towns have been seen and heard. Not so here. If you want to gloss over the sorry lack of communication by our local leaders that's your prerogative, but the vast majority of people I have come across have been wondering what our leaders are doing - and why our schools were not near the top of the priority list.

We have an elementary school that has power, yet they aren't using it to even meet and make contingency plans for our children OR why not reopen it, Chester/Mendham has done this where one school is insession and another isn't. These are unprecendented times and we need creative leadership as well as regular communication. Our $175k Super, hasn't done anything to show leadership or that he is doing everything in his power to get the kids back to school! Heck they aren't even talking to JCP&L, according to their last message!! If you don't care yet about the lack of school leadership you will when your children will be going to school on Saturdays!!! Leta, I am a parent of school aged children, and the Superintendant, and especially the Assistant Superintendant, are completely useless under normal circumstances. It is no surprise to me that they have nothing planned in an emergency, since they can barely handle the day to day operations of the schools. The Assistant Superintendant is making just as much money to sit around and do nothing at all for the school district. Why would he do anything now? You are 100% correct. Our schools are going to hell in a hand basket, and they are taking the kids down with them. The current curriculum stinks anyway...they may as well just stay home.

In driving around the mountain and valley and looking at all of the devastion still untouched, there are at least 24 to 30 areas that need large teams of 5-10 trucks crews or more to get back online. With all of the tree removal, pole setting, transformer installation and wiring that remains to be done, I think the mayor is incredibly naive, or in denial, to think this can be wrapped up by Sunday. I think a large number of residents should prepare for at least 5-7 more days of no power. I hope I am wrong. Until he faces the reality of the situation and starts dealing with it, mayor short he is only opening himself up for more criticism, which at this point is deserved. We already know that JCP&L lies. West springtown rd power line may be fixed by tonight, if not it will be tomorrow says lineman. Note: this line ends, in a westerly direction, at the mci tower (orig name). Beyond that the homes on west springtown receive electricity from the zellers road side

Not sure if they are still there but they said if they didn't finish tonight they would be back tomorrow. They are one of multiple crews working on the circuit that serves the area. See the mayor's afternoon update on the twsp web page: http://wtmorris.org/

I'm one of the houses on Pine w/o power but nobody on our street got hurt, my roof is intact, and no water damage. If JCP&L puts me as a lower priority I think I can deal with it and try not to get too cranky. It could be way worse for most of us. I am generally been impressed with the folks of Long Valley pitching in to support each other, share resources and pitch in when they can. hang in there folks.

Just more lies!!! I live right across the street from the high school, still no power and not a single repair truck in sight. This is unbelievable. Maybe the higher up exec's of JCP&L would like to try living with no heat, electric and water for 12 days

No power back for me either- off Old Farmers Rd and in the Capitol Estates section. I am really missing clear communication about when we can reasonably expect restoration

Beacon Hill is unbelievable! Power restoration? How about let's get the huge trees off the power lines so real power work can be done!

As of 5pm tonight there were FINALLY a bunch of utility trucks on Beacon Light/Beacon Hill! (First ones I've seen there, or in the area in general, thus far.)

I have yet to see any power crews on west valley brook. Nor have I heard it mentioned in any of the updates. There are about 2 miles worth of homes still with nothing all on well and septic.

At 3:30pm today there were crews on Flocktown and Dorset/Warwick drive. I was really hoping for power and to actually drive home via Naughright; nope. Friends staying with me live in Port Murry and they got power today, but the service line to their house had to be replaced! I don't get it.
I also agree that getting updates on day 10/11 from the Mayor is seriously ridiculous! Use Facebook and Twitter to be informative, maybe you'll actually have more than 136 followers. Complete nonsense.

No power on Ann Rd near Nestlingwood..... I guess we are still waiting for the Naughright Road debacle to be repaired. This major road in Washington Twsp still closed on day 12 is a disgrace. Thanks JCP&L for nothing...

JCPL Supervisor

5:52 pm on Saturday, November 10, 2012

I am a supervisor for JCPL and I resent the bashing that JCPL is getting on the patch. Long Valley was placed lower on the priority list than other areas because it does not have any huge businesses or major roads going through it, and because it has a higher percentage of white trash than any other toen in Morris County. There was so much damage that we had to prioritize . . . . do you think that LV residents should come before the residents of a nursing home or hospital???

You are a supervisor for JCP&L calling a town white trash...that is absolutely disgusting and uncalled for.

Mayor Ken Short left yesterday to go on vacation in Aruba. Deputy Mayor Roehrich also left to go out of town. No one is currently in charge. I guess the overhelmng message from the township to those with out power is : We were just re-elected. Don't bother us.

Hey jcpl supervisor, the problem is that we have been lied too, whether it is from our mayor or you guys passing false information to us white trash. It's been 2weeks of mis-messaging to us the folks that pay your flippin salary. You guys need to get your heads out where the sun don't shine and be straight up with us. That is all we have been asking. The bashing started due to false information and the promises made last year to us and the recent events. So get your facts straight before you start slinging comments you classless putz.

Hey jcp&l supervisor, how many people came up when you fixed the problem on Naughright? That was our major road and it feeds many developments and a school that was ignored for 12 days. You were fixing single line troubles in other towns when hundreds of families were affected by these downed wires. JCP&L suck.

Jcpl supervisor: I would be careful. There will be a class action lawsuit, and whether it is won, or lost, last a year or 4, what you have done is taken a position for your company and made a comment that may cost a lot of money. Hopefully, there is nothing criminal, to include power priority to political figures etc. All things pertaining to this debacle will become discoverable, whether in a civil or criminal court. JCPL will be force to fire people, as a sign of good faith, and my guess is you will be one of them my friend. Laugh, and call us WT all you want my friend but I think you underestimate the collection of accomplished people in this town..If anything, all internal emails pertaining to this town on behalf of Long Valley will be turned over...and your remarks will be attributed to you, and attributed as an official statement of the company. Bad Faith cases may never lead to big payouts, but I will just be happy to have the case move along so we can learn more, and for those like yourself, will lose their jobs.

JCPL Supervisor. How do you have time to be berating our community on our Patch? If you aren't catching up on your sleep shouldn't you be 'supervising' the hard working crews in field so they can have some direction, finish the job and get back home to their families? back to work! Or is it only the ground crews doing 16 hour days? If you truly are a representative of JCP&L management, why would anyone be surprised by the FU attitude and lack of respect for our requests for information. Nobody has asked for power before essential services. In fact people have been asking for the schools to be restored before our own homes. Way to represent the company that pays your salary! I hope you will be rewarded for your loyalty and your lack of class

If you spent your time worrying about what you are reponsible for maybe you guys would have understood what are issues were you fraud. As for the unprofessional derogatory comment I hope you are exposed and you loose your job you classes excuse for human.
