$56K Raised for Kids of Couple Killed During Sandy

Oldest child of Rich and Beth Everett set up donation page seeking $5K.

In just 24 hours, friends, family and strangers alike donated more than $56,000 to the children of Rich and Beth Everett via the Internet, only 10 days after the couple was killed by a fallen tree during Hurricane Sandy.

A donation page on the Wish Upon a Hero website was set up by a teen claiming to be the Everett's oldest child, Zoe, on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

On Thursday night, a thank you note was posted and donations were closed, with Zoe stating, "On behalf of my siblings and myself, I would like to express our sincerest thanks for the overwhelming support and generosity shown to us."

The message continued by saying, "The donations have ensured our well-being for the next few months and will hold us over until we are able to access our own funds."

Rich and Beth Everett owned the Blue Crest Riding Center in Long Valley. They were on North Gate Road in Mendham Township with their 14- and 11-year-old sons in a pick-up truck when 100-foot tree fell on the cab of the vehicle, killing the parents. The two children were able to free themselves from the wreckage.

A private memorial service was held at the riding center on Sunday, Nov. 4 for close family and friends.

“Before Hurricane Sandy I was a typical 19-year-old student at Rutgers,” Zoe Everett said on the donation page. “A Hurricane Sandy gust blew a 100-foot tree on the cab of the truck killing both of my parents… A moment in time, a second of bad luck, changed my life and my sibling’s lives forever.”

To see the donation page, which has already brought in tens of thousands of dollars, go here.

The Everetts had four children; Zoe, Talia, Theodore and Pierce, ages 19, 17, 14 and 11.

Comments flooded the donation page since it was launched, with well-wishers leaving their sentiments.

"Zoe, I am so sorry to hear about your devastating loss. I couldnt begin to imagine the pain that you and your siblings are going thru. I hope my donation helps, although I know that no amount of money can ease the pain. You and your siblings are in my prayers," said user emmavernoia.

User maxhockley said, "I'm so sorry to hear what happened, but I'm impressed by your courage. From reading what you wrote, I'm sure your siblings will be in good hands."

The donation page's original goal was to reach $5,000. By the time it was closed, $56,624.81 had been raised.

According to the Blue Crest Riding Center Facebook page, those who still wish to donate can leave a gift at the TD Bank at 535 State Route 10 in Randolph, 07869. Checks should be made to the Everett Family Fund.

Those poor children, we as a community should rally around them. So tragic. Their lives are forever changed.

Five mins either way.......so sad for the children.

Jason--why did you say "claiming to be the Everett's oldest child.......?"
Was there a question about the validity? The money did go to those children, right?

As you will notice on the site, it was not Zoe Everett who submitted the request, but the owner of the Wish Upon a Hero foundation, Dave Girgenti: "The Foundation will be assisting Zoe and her siblings. We are posting a wish on her behalf."

Hopefully the children do receive the money, but whatever the disposition of the money, Mr. Girgenti has certainly "benefited" by the family's loss.

Hey Liberty,
Thanks for the comment. The reason we put that in the article is because no one from the Everett family confirmed, with Patch, it was set up by Zoe. Obviously the page is real, as it is live on the Internet, and donations have poured in, but we have not been told specifically it was created by the family. Because of that, we had to write the sentence in that manner.
Thanks again for asking, Liberty.

There is another way to donate, HappyValley. Those who still wish to donate can leave a gift at the TD Bank at 535 State Route 10 in Randolph, 07869. Checks should be made to the Everett Family Fund.

This is a dreadfully sad story, those poor children. I am sorry they were out driving in a hurricane, you just never know....I'm not particularly fond on driving during breezy days with the conditions of many of our road side trees...
