Saw this on Facebook.... "Just got a call back from JCP&L supervisor. What you believe they didn't even know that an elementary school (Cucinella) was still out! She took down the name and address of Cucinella and she said it would be put on the priority list. She is supposed to call me right back. Told her people can't go to work without our children not in school, lack of running water, etc. She said schools are usually the things to be put on first! Keep your fingers crossed!"

There is no "priority list." This was discussed on radion station 101.5 FM. JCP & L just tells you that to make you feel better and get you off their case. Their media spokesperson "promised" on Tuesday that power would be restored to the majority of Washington Township by Wednesday. Now that date is Sunday. Can you really believe what they say?

The coordination between our town officials and JCP&L has been abysmal if not criminal. All the discussion and "talk" about emergency preparedness since 9/11 is just that - TALK and no action. We learn and hear more about what is going on through web sites and the school Honeywell Instant Alert system. I have not seen one utility truck on Naughright Road between Cucinella and Arrowhead in ten days! And now we are told that we have to wait until Sunday at the earliest! Laws need to be passed to hold essential/vital service providers accountable not only for their actions but for their inaction.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but wires along a driveway that serve only a single home will be THE VERY LAST thing to get restored. A JCP&L re told me so.

If you are saying you can't get out because of the trees, and you need to get out, then post your address and I'll come with a chain saw and clear it if it's safe to do so.

Property taxes deadline extended to nov 16th. Big deal. I believe there is a 10 day grace period normally, so they give us SIX says more??? Why not a grace period after the initial 10 of the number of days w/out power? Heck with JCP%L - let's deduct a penalty off our property taxes for the township doing absolutely ZIP during this. BTW - how do I pay this?? Guess I can hike to town!!

I called as well. I'd also suggest citing the lack of local leadership, preparedness and influence as being just as much of an issue as is the poor communication by JCPL.
Further, no local 24x7 shelters, library only working standard hours, outdated and ambiguous information...this is an absolutely incredible situation. Can'y wait to see the local tax rate increase and JCPL surcharge for storm clean up. Hording pennies to remit my anger...

re Ljm09 link above:
There was this in the article ""The storm caused damage to the backbone of the system that needed to be repaired first," Morano said. "We can't do that street-level repair until we restore power to these substations."

Question: is this a technical issue or a resource issue. It appears to me that crews, if there were more of them, could have been working on all those downed lines, replacing poles, etc. instead of the serial process JCP&L undertakes.

The lack of communication and leadership from our town elected officials is appalling. They could have used the honeywell instant alert system at the school to start to get the info out. Why don't we have a town-wide honeywell system like other towns? Cell phone and landline phone numbers are used to contact people with important info and updates.

The Patch, Honeywell and WRNJ have been the best (only) sources of information...just by reading these comments anyone knowing the area can glean the extent of the damage here. There are so many with wells and oil heat, no place available to shower (when my kid had diarrhea the other day I almost cried), few places to keep warm, now snow on trees leaning on wires and snow covering live wires on the ground, driving under trees leaning on wires....

This is absolutely the scariest situation I've ever been in. Afraid to drive around town, staying in with the kids to conserve gas and for safety, thankful for the wood stove and to be near a highway, concerned for those without a source of heat....

I think residents are frustrated most by the lack of direct communication by the town (except regarding school closings).

Best comment is from Angelo - worth reiterating - "Call NJ Governor' office; they are keeping tallies....told me a lot of calls from Washington Twp, Morris. Keep calling and have your neighbors call. 609-292-6000"

Stay warm and help each other however you can...looks like it's gonna be awhile.

Thank you so much for the offer Ljm09. We are lucky in that we now have power. We have since opened our home to neighbors/friends/coworkers. I encourage everyone to reach out - especially to those without heat who are elderly or have children.
And I like John's idea for a town-wide Honeywell system. I'm sure it can be easily modified to include messages to the entire town for emergency information.

Ron Morano, a JCP&L spokesman, said.... "the geography of Washington Township proved extremely labor intensive because "putting up six poles might serve only 12 customers (in the township)."

This is their PR guy talking NONSENSE and putting the spin on. We still have SCHOOLS (three?) out + thousands of residents out where the restoration delays are not because "putting up six poles might serve only 12 customers (in the township)."

And, more nonsense from him, "The storm caused damage to the backbone of the system that needed to be repaired first," Morano said. "We can't do that street-level repair until we restore power to these substations." If the right number of resources were brought in they they could have been working on poles and lines while the substation work was going on.

call the Gov office..No power all along Flocktown, Dorset, Half of Wellington, all of that large area of homes..Not single homes on a rural road, but hundreds of homes all lined up, with no poles damaged. So, they attempt to get large areas done first? that is an additional misrepresentation. Intentional misrepresentations that cause us to act on this information, losing money, and other loses should be recouped in a town wide class action lawsuit. There will be tons of internal emails, power priority decisions based on a myriad of unacceptable reasons, and we have past meetings addressing the issue. Last time I checked, LV had its share of contributors to the state of NJ and the economy. We have been set aside. They do one day in LV, then leave for 3 days...return for a day, then leave. The NY News was in Parsip last night interviewing people, and JCPL was right behind working. I then learned from a friend, thousands got their power. Call a news conference even if nobody shows, call one town leaders.

3 suggestions for the mayor to alleviate some of the pain and show some genuine care for those without power:
1) Hire some food trucks that service coffee, sandwiches, etc. Position them at various points in town and subsidize the cost so that people can have warm food for next to nothing. Announce their location on the town website.
2) Use a school buses to drive residents to 24 hour shelters, or shelters better equipped than what we have. Post a schedule and pick-up locations on the website .
3) If you want to publicize the town's problem with JCP&L, take a school bus, fill it with some of the unhappy residents who are cold and hungry and drive it to the home of the JCP&L CEO. Park it in front of his house. Have a press conference. Invite the press; they would love it because it would be great post-election news. You'd get national coverage; far more than you get on the local radio station.

If you can find the box Mr. Mayor, you need to think outside of it. Do something!

Excellent suggestions, Domino! There must be a way to find CEO's address. Also,
call one of the NY TV stations, they'd get on the ball! Everyone could also email the networks with amount of time w/o power, etc. It does not seem rational to focus on AC casinos and not the schools!

A friend who works for JCPL said that their management couldnt care less about getting northern NJ power restored. All of the national focus is down south. I personally have not seen a single truck working on top of the Mountain. They have no sense of urgency and their canned statements from their reps is insulting. They should have their permit to provide electrical services revoked.
