Man Arrested for Owing $131K in Child Support, Cops Say

Long Valley resident taken into custody at municipal building, turned over to Sussex County.

A Long Valley man appearing in court for a prior offense was arrested Thursday when it was learned he owed $131,691.86 in child support, Washington Township Police said.

Frederick Scharnikow, 54, was taken into custody at the Washington Township Municipal Building for an active child support warrant issued by the Sussex County Sheriff Department, Lt. Doug Compton said.

Scharnikow was appearing in court after being charged with obstruction of law, driving while intoxicated, failure to stop, driving while suspended, reckless driving, and maintenance of lamps

Scharnikow was processed at the Washington Township Police Department, but later turned over to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Department, Compton said.
