In a joint effort to help raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer, students, teachers and families from the West Morris Central and Mendham High School communities gathered Friday night and took part in the annual Relay For Life event.

Participants walked through the night at West Morris Central High School and took part in a slew of activities.

English teachers Laura Pelizzoni and Debbie Gonzalez, of Mendham and Central, respectively, were the advisors for the project. The event hosted a sit-down dinner for cancer survivors prior to the relay, and was followed by a luminara-candle ceremony.

The group’s goal in 2011 was to raise $120,000, which was exceeded as funds topped $135,000. The group won third place for funds raised per capita nationwide last year. Goals for 2012 were $130,000.

Our fourth year participating. Congrats to co-leaders Debbie and Laura, district teachers and administrators, student committees and all the other students and families that participated to make this event a huge success. Honoring and remembering those most affected by this disease and giving them hope. From the opening ceremonies, to the speeches, survivor lap and dinner, lighting of the luminaria, silent walk, the contests, dancing, and camaraderie shown by everyone made this an exceptionally memorable experience.
