Report: Study Shows WMC Goes Unranked in NJ

Sister-school Mendham High receives 33rd placement from U.S. News & World Report.

Mendham High School is ranked as the 33rd best high school in New Jersey, while West Morris Central didn’t crack the top 50, in a report released by U.S. News & World Report this week.

The rankings of some 22,000 high schools in the country were compiled by reviewing a number of factors, including serving students well, college readiness, and performance on state proficiency tests, the report said.

Test scores tallied were from the 2009-10 school year, according to the report. Only the top 51 schools in New Jersey were given rankings.

According to the report, 40.9-percent of the senior class at Mendham High School is college ready. Mendham boasted a 99-percent proficiency rate in English, and a 93-percent proficiency rate in Math. Overall, the high school ranked 632nd in the country.

West Morris Central, on the other hand, went unranked in the report, but still scored higher than the state average on the three factors.

According to the report, 35.5-percent of that year’s senior class was college ready. Students were 98-percent proficient in English, and 90-percent proficient in Math, the report said.

Charter and Magnet schools were also part of the rankings. Only one school in Morris County–Chatham High School, ranked 7th, made the top-10 in the report.

now i suggested Long Valley convert the extra school to a Gifted and Talented magnet school.. and look what is #1 and getting all the recognition.. a gifted and talented school...
..
but hey, just keep forcing all those gifted kids out of the district and keep watching our ranking fall (and thus our property value)

I agree, LaQuin. How very sad that this is where WMC fell. Where have all our tax dollars gone? This is shameful. The brightest kids are getting the short end of the stick. I truly hope the district does not end up making a "special ed" center. I know there is a need for "special ed", but what about those children who are capable of so much and are NOT being challenged and educated to THEIR full potential?

"those children who are capable of so much and are NOT being challenged and educated to THEIR full potential" may very well be among the special ed/needs population, did that ever occur to you?

Many special needs children are among the gifted population.

I think our kids are not up to par in high school because of the lame elemantary and middle school curriculum here. Mendham and Chester are better educating their kids in math and language arts.

This report is ridiculous. According to it, you must be in AP/IB courses to be considered "College Ready".

How is it that these 2 schools are together in a region but they blow us away? I do not understand this. Mendhsm feels they are supporting us with their tax dollars? It makes no sense.

If you look at the numbers WMM did not "blow us away". They had more students in AP/IB (45% vs 35%) which is what US NEws rates College Ready. Dont think that AP necessarily means smarter. Lots of kids choose not to participate in those programs. WMM had 93% prof in math and WMC had 90%, WMM had 99% proficient in eng , WMC had 98%. I would hardly call that being blown away. They both scored in the 90% .... WMC has more special ed kids. I think both schools did very well. Statistics can be misleading.

I attended central and moved to mendham for the specific reason of better schools for my child. That said this study ranks DOVER high school as #47, so that pretty much makes the whole thing worthless.

The Mendhams and Chesters beat us in Advanced Prof., I don't have scores handy but here there was a wide difference.

In the past I would've taken the headline of this article at face value, and been upset about it. But seeing the comment above about Dover made me actually go to the linked site and read the rankings and numbers. After reading their methodology, I have to agree with those who say this list not quite what it seems. Unfortunately, this ranking/article might carry a lot of weight with other people. I would still rather have my children attend WMC than several of the "Top 50".
Go to the link. Check out the numbers, and read the methodology.

I also attended lv schools and central. now i live in mendham so my child will go to mendham Twp schools from beginning to end. If you think that lv and mendham are comparable, you live in lv. It's not just the schools it's everything, and I'm not saying lv is Dover, but it's sure not mendham.

what a surprise, your post reads like a National Enquirer headline. Lots of flashy words, but upon closer reading, not only does it contain no useful facts, it doesn't even contain an opinion. You stated the following facts: 1. You attended lv schools and central; 2. You now live in mendham; and 3. lv is not mendham. Nobody cares about the first two, and everybody knows the third one (it's called a tautology.) So if you want to take the time to add a comment, why not take a little extra time writing it so that it includes either a fact or an opinion about something. Reading between the lines, your post seems to be saying "I used to be like you lv people, but now I have moved to Mendham, so now I am much better than all of you." Was that the intent?
