School Funding, Shelters on Mayor's Agenda

Regional mayors meeting Thursday to focus on Sandy recovery, preparedness and efficiencies.

The next meeting of the mayors from Washington Township, the Chesters and the Mendhams Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Chester Borough Hall will feature several regional issues beyond the feasibility study.

The group first began meeting publicly in the spring of 2012 as an advisory committee alongside members of the area’s school boards to potentially come to terms on a regional feasibility study. The purpose of the study was to find financial and educational gains in a potential restructuring of the area’s schools.

An impasse was the outcome, as Mendham Township and Chester Borough couldn’t agree with the other three towns on what the feasibility study should analyze.

On the agenda for the Jan. 31 meeting is an update from Christine Gorski, ormer chairperson of the advisory group, who will be updating the group on the legislative solution to the regional school funding formula.

Another item for discussion is certified shelters for western Morris county as well as obtaining grant monies for the Office of Emergency Management.

The mayors also look to discuss regional pre-planning for events and a JCP&L review by Chester Township Mayor Bill Cogger.

The meeting is open to the public.
