Short, Roehrich Named Mayor and Vice—Again

Town's top elected officials part of same five-member group from 2012.

For the second consecutive year Ken Short and Bill Roehrich will be Washington Township’s mayor and vice mayor.

The two were both elected by their fellow committeemen Wednesday night at the township’s annual reorganization meeting. Short and Roehrich were both re-elected in November to three-year terms.

This is the fifth consecutive term for Short and the second for Roehrich. Short will also serve in his fourth consecutive year as mayor.

“This was an extremely difficult year in Washington Township,” said Short after the committee approved his appointment as mayor. “I thank the committee for placing their trust in me, but everyone needs to realize we are five equal members, and we’re all responsible for the decisions made for this town.”

Short made mention of some of the positives from 2012, including the five miles of roadways that were paved; the down payment on a new ambulance and fire truck; and, with the aid of county funds, the purchase of a new senior citizen bus.

As budget season for 2013 nears, Short said it would be another difficult year for expenditures, citing the state-mandated 2-percent tax cap municipalities are bound by.

“We’ve done a good job of keeping costs done, but it has been difficult,” Short said. “We’ve decreased the budget $900,000 over the past three years, and I’m inviting all township residents to our upcoming budget meetings. There are 18,500 of you, and just five of us. We want to hear from you.”

Short laid out his goals and that of the committee’s for 2013, including:

  • Additional road paving projects
  • Purchase of digital sign boards
  • Generator systems in certain municipal buildings
  • Upgrade communications systems
  • Make trail systems more publicly accessible
  • Add sidewalks to downtown area via grant funds
  • Pursue the possible relocation of the Long Valley Fire Department building

Short thanked the town’s volunteers, many of whom were on hand to be sworn into their positions in the fire departments and first aid squad.

“These are the folks who leave their homes in a time of need to help others,” Short said. “It’s the volunteers in this community that gives that little extra to make this a nice community.”

The Washington Township Committee’s first work session of the year is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the municipal building on Jan. 16.

That's a pretty ignorant and childish remark and totally uncalled for. I may not agree with everything Kevin Nedd says but we need some voices of dissent in this township of fools who are happy to be led around by the nose every year by the same incompetents. And Stacie - I used to respect your posts but you have lost me now. All your talk of being "nice" and standing up against bullies on your blog has just been shown to be a lot of hot air. Would you want someone to treat you children this way? Shame on you!

Not much to add except how residents of Washington Township deserve the incompetent leaders they continue to elect. Besides this…it is currently 77 degrees and sunny in Honolulu. On Friday, it's projected to reach 79 degrees with a low of 70. The frigid personalities of Tracy, Stacie, and Linda should be right at home during Long Valley’s projected low of 18 on Friday.

Mr. Nedd, I could not follow why someone living 6000 miles away commented so much about Washington Township. Then someone said you that actually your home is here, and your wife lives here? Was she here all alone during the power outage?

Congratulations to all the deserving committeemen and volunteer officials who were sworn in/recognized on Wed. night. These are mostly thankless jobs that are done diligently and behind the scenes. Kudos to you! But--I may be in the very small minority here, I can't get past "the trip." Short said, "These are the folks who leave their homes in a time of need to help others...." I just have to sadly laugh at that, when we know why he left his home. Most of you will say, so what, big deal, get over it, small town, nobody cares, blah, blah. It was poor judgment.

Why aren't any of the other township committee members stepping into these posts? Jim LiaBratten has never taken a leadership role on either the board of education or the township committee. Does he have a pulse? Tracy Tobin was very visible during hurricane sandy after Short and Roehrich both bailed out and left town. Why wasn"t he appointed? It goes without saying that Dave Kennedy will never get one of the these posts since he is not part of the good old boy network and some of his colleagues are still trying to stab him in the back. I guess Washington Township enjoys watching re-runs. Too bad.

Seeing as they were elected unanimously by the three guys you mention, clearly they were the best two for the job in the minds of their fellow committeemen, who would be in the best position to know.

As for the comments above, I think it is in poor taste to poke sticks at the village idiot. He is too be pitied not teased. Let us hope the level of discourse on the Patch can rise in 2013.

Now looks look at a couple of the goals for 2013.

1) Purchase of digital sign boards: For where exactly??? Everyone in the township hates the digital sign that Drakestown Methodist Church put up on Naughright. Don’t tell me that the town hall is planning to put one of these eyesores up.

2) Add sidewalks to downtown area; For whom exactly??? I go down to the village area to take pictures, and never see anyone on foot there. Are we to believe that if we install sidewalks, we’ll suddenly see lots of foot traffic in the village area?

I think the town should investigate the cost of a low power AM radio transmitter in lieu of digital sign boards. The AM radio transmitter would be a lot less visually obtrusive, and it would be able to reach EVERYBODY in town instead of only those people who happen to drive past a sign. Also, you can convey a lot more meaningful and detailed information via radio than you can via a sign. In fact, if the sign has enough information to be useful, it's probably a hazard because someone will be trying to read it while driving instead of watching the road. Also, if the idea is to convey emergency-related information on the signs, then it's only minimally useful, because if there really is an emergency, people should be staying off the roads unless the travel is absolutely necessary anyway. Everyone with a car most likely has an AM radio available at all times (in the car), and everyone should have a battery operated or crank-up powered AM radio inside their home anyway. We got plenty of highly useful and detailed information via WRNJ radio (1510 AM and 104.7 FM) after Sandy, and until the town gets its own AM transmitter, we can make very good use of WRNJ. They seemed quite willing to put "regular programming" on hold during the storm and just broadcast storm-related stuff until things were all cleared up.

First, if it's an major weather event where everyone is told to keep off the roads, a sign in front of the town hall will serve very little purpose. Second, while radio broadcasts are helpful, how about that new fangled invention called the internet??? While there was much helpful info on the Long Valley Patch during Sandy and its aftermath, there was virtually nothing on the town website. Why wasn't that utilized to pass along information to residents??? Lastly, while we received long-winded phone messages about school closings on a daily basis, there were messages concerning general information (ie; road closings, JCP&l updates, etc.). Why doesn't the mayor and council use the Honeywell instant alert system to disseminate information during times of crisis?

Minor correction to a mistake which is frequently made. WRNJ is in, and pays Taxes to, Washington Township. They call themselves "WRNJ Hackettstown" so that no one confuses them with all the other Washington Townships in NJ. They can call themselves whatever they want as long as they address their property tax correctly. I will add my personal thanks to Norman Worth, Joyce Estey and all the other WRNJ personnel who worked with us to get emergency information out during SANDY, IRENE and many other weather events. Their annual radio auction is coming up in March, for the benefit of Hackettstown Regional Medical Center. I hope residents will donate prizes and bid at the auction. I know I will! Thanks Norm and Joyce.

From all reports, the “Draft Tracy” momentum reached a frenzy pitch and Tobin fed it by arriving fashionably late, only to quash the hopes of the faithful. All newly elected officials and municipal new hires left en mass shortly after induction waking Jason in time to get home to file his Patch report. :)

The "downtown" is a mere 3 blocks. Where else would sidewalks be needed. They already exist in this area.

Definitely not going to increase pedestrian traffic there nor positively affect revenue in that area. If the township wants to do this, they better reevaluate the zoning in that area to allow for more commercial development otherwise it is a waste.

How about CONNECT the existing sidewalks on the mountain between neighborhoods. E.G. Flocktown between Cherry Street and Nestlingwood, Flocktown between Flocktown Rd School and Quail, Flocktown and Naughright, Rock Road to East Springtown.

Electric signs are a waste of money. Nobody cares how many people have been arrested for DUIs MOPD! I'd hope these signs wouldn't be used to convey dumb, distracting things like this.

How about LEVERAGING this website as a means of conveying information regarding the town with good old fashioned signs.

Thoughts on this Tracy?

Brian I am assuming you are directing your question to me.
The electronic signs being discussed would be trailer mounted and therefore moveable. The suggestion came out of a follow up meeting to Sandy response and issues. Messages such as the location of emergency shelters, flooded or blocked roads, detours, safe disposal of unused medications, vaccination programs, etc. are possible uses for the signs. Depending on the County for an electronic sign puts us in competition with all the other towns in Morris County. A single sign would not cover the main commuting /travel routes through the town. We tried leveraging everything including WRNJ/Patch/Nixle etc. and still had residents telling us they did not know about shelters at the fire houses, the Library being open with heat/light/Internet/charging stations for electronic devices/ acvities for children,
St. Luke & LVFAS offering meals, etc.

The Mayor told us that the Honeywell alert/message system had been investigated a few years ago and there was some problems re using a primarily school based system and the cost involved. I believe the Mayor said he is working with the School Superintendent to see if the problems can be overcome, costs reduced, etc. At the start of the storm, there was no Internet service/cell phone service/land line service at PD headquarters. Closed roads and shelter information was on the town website along with the few updates provided by JCP&L. Lack of timely and accurate information from JCP&L was a real handicap in getting additional info onto the website.

Well, here's what I find curious Tracy. During the election season, we get any number of phone messages from local, state and federal candidates who are seeking office. In fact, in 2008, our good friend Kevin Nedd gave up on the road signs he used in 2005, and utilized phone messages instead to get his word out. I don't understand why all these political candidates (as well as our schools) somehow find a way to send out these phone messages, but our mayor and council supposedly has great difficulty doing so. What I also find ironic is that during the November 2011 meeting with JCP&L, Mayor Short blasted the utility company for not using Honeywell system to keep its customers informed, and yet the mayor did not take his own advice and use it during Hurricane Sandy. Even if Mayor Short had nothing significant to report, I think if all the residents sitting in their cold, dark houses knew that he was doing everything he could to work with JCP&L to get the situation resolved, that would have gone a long way.

The Mayor didn't have access to the proper resources to report he had nothing significant to report (with respect to his actions). The 2 phone lines from his suite in Aruba were tied up calling room service and making reservations for another round of golf.

Nixle sounds like it would meet the need if everyone signed up for it. I take personal responsibility for not having done that already. Could you please give information on what Nixle does and how to sign up ....( Sounds like a a good article Jason). Maybe the town can invest in a post card mailing to residents describing the service and requesting people to sign up, the schools can pass on the Nixle info to families, Church bulletins, Observer Tribune etc.
