Suspicious Package Was Utility Device, Cops Say

Hackettstown streets were closed for two hours Tuesday night while corrosion device was investigated.

A suspicious package that forced evacuations and closed a portion of Route 46 in Hackettstown Tuesday night turned out to be a device left behind by Elizabethtown Gas, Hackettstown Police Sgt. Darren Tynan said.

Residents in the area of East Prospect and East Baldwin streets were evacuated when police responded to Manor Drive on a report of a suspicious device in the grass, Tynan said.

Wires were connected to the electronic device, which led to an orange cylinder shaped container that was holding liquid, Tynan said. An investigation revealed the device was a corrosion detector utilized by Elizabethtown Gas, Tynan said.

No injuries were reported, Tynan said, and the roads were closed for approximately two hours.

Assisting at the scene was the Hackettstown Fire Department, Hackettstown Fire Police, Hackettstown Rescue Squad, Warren County Fire Marshall, Allamuchy Township Fire Police, New Jersey State Police Bomb Unit, Warren County Prosecutors’ Office and Elizabethtown Gas.

Would be kind of nice to show a picture of the device so that citizens can provide an accurate report for any future incident.

Sterling - Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, law enforcement officials would not allow press closer to the scene to take photos or gather information until the area was secure, at which point all devices were removed.

It doesn't matter if we had a picture or not. Suspicious is suspicious. Even a laptop bag or backpack is deemed suspicious if it is left unattended. We deal with suspicious packages every day in NYC. Just yesterday we had one on the corner of Broadway and 56th Street. It turned out to be nothing but still needs to be dealt with.
