How about the Washington Twp. 1st responders who give up there time 24 hours a day to help us in our need of help. They are the real deal and should be the Person of the Year. They give up time with the families to further train and educate themselves to protect all of us. You never hear them asking for a pat on the back. Next time you see a Fireman or EMT thank them for there work and dedication.

Hands down - Mayor Ken Short for abandoning the township in the aftermath of Sandy for a sunny Aruba vacation, while thousands of his constituents sat in their cold, dark, powerless homes.

How about Glenn Lightner whose battle taught a community how to truly pull together. His fight, his parents endless efforts...everything. That's a hero to me!

Hands down Glenn Lightner! He brought and entire community together and was one of the bravest young men I ever met.

Without a doubt, Glenn Lightner. He was the most courageous 14 year old I have ever met. I agree with Stacie and Dorene 100%, he did bring the entire community together. Glenn and his parents were a true inspiration to all of us.

The Lightner family has announced details for community members to pay respects to their son, Glenn Lightner, who passed away this week.

A public viewing is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church on Spring Lane.

A public mass is also scheduled at Our Lady of the Mountain Church on Monday at 11 a.m. Interment, which will follow, is private.

All flowers and arrangements may be sent to St. Mark's Church in advance of Saturday's viewing.
IMHO I thought it "should have been in lieu of flowers..." and donations to a charitable organization, so hands down I vote for our towns volunteer services ie first aid squad, fire department, or even the school for a memorial project. Not in the pockets of a florist

I also vote for Glenn Lightner. His bravery brought our community together, and brought the world new strides toward a cure for cancer.

As I read the article, my first thought was Glenn Lightner, but not just because he brought the community together. He deserves it for being so brave and fighting an incredibly difficult battle in an effort to overcome his illness. No child should have to endure what he did.

I do agree with the other suggestions, emergency responders and WMCHS football team, but Glenn has my vote!

And Joanne, people send flowers to funerals no matter what the family requests. Florists have a right to make a living, too. Let's not turn this tragedy into an argument over who should have done what. It was the family's decision, and just because you would have done something different does not mean they are wrong. The family has been through more than enough, and they do not need to see comments such as yours.

I will add that florists in our town DONATED flowers and certificates to fundraisers for Glenn, so regardless of whether you would have preferred to make a donation in Glenn's name somewhere - which you certainly can do - not wanting to put money " in the pockets of a florist" is an unnecessary comment. Just my 2 cents

I totally agree with your recommendation re the Township volunteers.

Re your comment about the Township Committee (Yes I am one of the people you labeled clueless.) Please refresh my memory re all the volunteer work you ahve done for the town over the past 10 years. I don't recall meeting you or seeing you name in the 30+ years I have served the town and it's residents.

Joanne, fair enough. Yes, and that is why I made a point to own that one and not let it be viewed as the family's choice. Sometimes it's as simple as us trying to do the right thing during a difficult time.

My first choice would be Glenn Lightner for fighting the battle of a lifetime-May he rest in peace--My second choice would be Jason Koestenblatt the editor of Patch -he certainly influenced the news "for better or worse" in long Valley

Merry Christmas to all! Today is supposed to be a day to rejoice. Mr Nedd, I have to agree with Mr Tobin, you're beating a dead horse with the Mayor and have taken this nice spirited idea and turned it into yet another chance to zing people. While you may pay taxes here, I believe you're residing elsewhere and didn't even suffer along with our community. Time to find something else to complain about.. Mr Letterman, thank you so much for your suggestion, you're the first in quite sometime to acknowledge the dedication and sacrifice of our volunteer First aid and Fire companies. We do work very hard to provide for our community. So again, I thank you sir for your thoughtfulness.

The whole Harrington Family. Following their Husband & Father's tradition they suppport a wide variety of non-profit groups in town, donate labor and materials to projects in town, donate generously to fund raisers, and volunteer their time and money towards making Washington Township a great place to live in.

Glenn lightner. He is one of the most courageous and strong people I have ever heard of outside if the military and government. God bless him.

Kevin needs to finally get a life and get off the patch. He comments about everything as if the world cares about his opinion. My vote however, is for Glenn Lightner who only saw the good in people and fought a good fight. I'm sure his family doesn't need to read all of the bickering back Ian's forth about donations and flowers. Lets see the real picture. God bless Glenn who is now an angel. And let's allow this holiday to be about nice people and good things. Can you handle it for one day Kevin?

Just try to give it a rest already. And give everyone a break from your constant debates. You comment on almost everything. Quite frankly, the news is not always reported accurately I'm sure the mayor chose to be away because Sandy was on the way. Please hold your fast fingers and contain yourself from your speed typing on the subject of our local government. You're obsessed. Everyone in long valley knows how much you adore the mayor. Change the subject. You're exhausting.

Perhaps you need to look deeper. I don't believe his vacation anticipated sandy. I think it was coincidence. You just keep beating on it and bringing it up constantly. People need to remember that if you want to live a crotchety life of a shut-in, don't expect to be able to do it as an elected official. We the people hold our elected officials responsible for thier action or lack of action. That is why we have elections and are not a totalitarian government. Perhaps a class in political science should be taught free of charge to the people running this town. Nobody was impressed by the mayor. We were freezing to death and people died during this storm. At our time of need we were let down severely. We should not be attacked merely for being concerned citizens!
