Thoughts about the State of the Union Speech

In his speech, the president ticked off a lot of new initiatives that have to be digested.

For example, the pre-school initiative was curious to me, and I couldn’t quite determine where he was coming from on that issue  (except to, perhaps placate and expand the NEA?). I did laud his trade school-high school initiatives, however.  Germany has been doing this for decades and it has paid off.  Too many kids are striving for college who aren’t suited to an academic career, though would be successful if they began with practical life experience through a technical high school.  There are not enough of these in the U.S. and it would allow trades to flourish again and the manufacturing sector to expand.

He closed with a very compelling case for better gun legislation.   Background checks do not stop 2nd Amendment rights and that seems like a sensible thing to enforce and strengthen.

I was glad to hear about the down-regulating of the war machine in far off places.  I think most of the country wants the focus on our domestic agenda. Infrastructure repairs, coupled with innovative manufacturing centers, combined with an emphasis on technical training programs, would bring many jobs for now and in the future.

What still surprises me about this president is the quantity and quality of his creativity.  His ideas seemed boundless. He still is focused. He is still hopeful.  He uplifts and encourages with his vision of a better America. I hope he can convince the ‘party of no’ to stop being so recalcitrant and put more of their energies into helping the economy grow instead of putting so much energy into wanting to see this president fail.  When his ideas fail, many of us also fail.  When these ideas move us forward, we all move forward.

I think the country is ready to embrace a more positive attitude as was outlined by these noble, and I daresay, lofty ideas.  The budget is important, yes – but, if you don’t have a vision of what the priorities are in the budget, then, the numbers are always going to be askew.

Much less compelling was Marc Rubio’s response. As the most interesting national GOP on the radar, his speech was disappointingly banal. It sounded as if it had been prepared weeks in advance of the State of the Union and just ticked-off a lot of GOP hyperbole—i.e., big government, more taxes, etc., without addressing any specific items in detail. (Where were these budget hawks when Bush spent over a trillion dollars on a war against a country under false pretenses?)  Furthermore, they seem to be best at complaining, but lack creative initiatives of their own.  I read the text of Rand Paul’s tea party response and it pretty much echoed what Rubio said.

On a fashion note, the first lady looked as if she’d just come from one of the inauguration parties.  Her bare arms looked cold being unadorned.  A tailored jacketed dress would seem more fitting. But who am I to judge?

Obama's speech was neither noble or creative, unless you consider creative and noble reading form a teleprompter. The word initiatives as used by Obama in the speech translate to more deficit spending.... here we go again.

Obama in his speech proposed no new incentives for economic growth. But he did propose using the EPA to implement cap and trade and tax, which will cause electric rates to double for poor people. And Obama defied a court ruling and the constitution by appointing two more jobs on the NLRB. One of his appointees is under investigation under the RICOH statutes.

There is a HUGE difference there Kevin! First and foremost my town and my school system is not that deeply in debt. In fact my town is debt free, and our school system is almost debt free and that is because we the citizens don’t let those our “leaders” spend money they don’t have. Wild concept isn't it?

Now Kevin – Take a huge breath and consider just what that video says. Excluding interest, that 2 year old is obligated to pay the government $68 a month until she is 62 years old, and that is just for the deficit spending we already have in place. However, unlike the video she will not be given a choice in this matter. Fact is she’ll pay that $68 a month for the rest of her life and get nothing in return for it, because that money has already been spent.

You Kevin, seem to think this is no big deal, so I challenge you to put your money where your mouth is. You can, Kevin, easily and legally send the government money above and beyond what you owe in taxes, earmarked to where you want it spent. So Kevin, will you be wiring a monthly check to the government for $68 to be applied against the debt,in addition to the taxes you owe stating now for the rest of your life?

Or do you still selfishly prefer to bestride my kids with a debt you refuse to admit exists?

There is no magic wand that will make it go away Kevin. You know that don't you?

Sorry BBalls, but that 2 year old isn't obligated to pay off debt that came before him or her. Once they earn or inherit income, they only have to pay taxes in a progressive manner that contributes to the servicing of that debt in a given year.

As for your challenge, no need for it as I don't complain about the services I pay for and never receive. Tom does the exact opposite when it comes to our schools. He constantly bitches while paying less than a quarter of what it takes to educate his son in the high school. If someone else is paying 75% of the cost of a service you are using you should learn to be grateful and STFU!

Kevin, you said: “Sorry BBalls, but that 2 year old isn't obligated to pay off debt that came before him or her. Once they earn or inherit income, they only have to pay taxes in a progressive manner that contributes to the servicing of that debt in a given year.”

Then logically based on what you wrote, if there is no debt, then she isn’t going to have to pay any debt service when she hit her years of making money, so she’ll have what is rightfully hers to keep. Also, does the fact her mother is paying that debt service today, take away from her younger years now? Do you think if her parent’s had an extra $136.00 a month to spend on her, she wouldn’t be better off? Besides, won’t that fit into the Obama way of thinking? More money in one’s pocket cures all evils. Isn’t that what Obama says?

Could you supply the numbers behind the 25/75% figures you are throwing around, Something doesn't sound right there. I think you made have made a mistake in your logic Kevin.

Two points.

1) Our progressive federal income tax system ensures the portion her parents pay today in servicing the debt is proportional to their ability to pay. So the flat monthly amount espoused in the video is bogus.

2) The percentages come from the fact Tom pays about $6K a year in property taxes. About 30 percent of this amount goes to the Regional BOE to educate his son. That's about $1,800. The cost to educate a child in our high schools is about $13K. I'll let you figure out the rest.

As for the CBO, their projections are a joke. They are based on promises that Congress makes, but never keeps. And that's before Obama started asking for even more money to be spent on things like universal preschool. Ironic that a guy who gives someone else stick for using more educational services than he pays for property taxes would support a guy who wants to shower gazillions of his tax dollars on more (unionized) teachers. Actually Kevein, I take that back there is a magic wand I forgot about. It is call QE Eternal, and it is monetizing our debt and therefore devaluing our dollars faster than you can say Ben Bernanke!

Did you know back in 1924, when hyperinflation struck Germany, people used to go to town with wheelbarrows full of money? I’m sure you saw pictures of that in high school history classes, right? Well here is something I bet you didn’t know, they used to lock their wheelbarrows to tress or lamp posts, while leveraging piles of money in them ungraded and out in the open.

Know why?

Because the wheelbarrows were in short supply and were worth more than they could hold filled with that German fiat money.

Here’s something else I bet you don’t know. Some wise Germans of that time said, Slow doen, we can’t spend and print money we can’t back! And you know what they were told? Don’t worry that can’t happen here.

PS in the 80ies, when gold was worth $300.00 an ounce the money to gold ratio was 100%. That is to say we had only printed enough dollars to equal the amount of gold we had. Today the ratio is 15%, and the fact of the matter is, if we want a 100% ratio again the price of gold would have to go to $14,750 an ounce. But don’t worry, hyperinflation it can’t happen here.

So I guess maybe you are right Kevin. If we devalue the dollar to the point that $68 a month buys you a stick of gum at the end of the year, what does it matter?

Faulty Logic Kevin – You’ve made a typical mistake liberals make, because they can’t see pasted today.

You state it costs $13K a year to give Tom’s son a high school education. You also say Tom contributes only $1.8K a year to that cost. Right? I've got that right, right?

Now here’s where you made your logic disconnect. Tom’s son will be in high school for 4 years creating a total cost of 52K. Correct?

So now we have to figure how long Tom’s dad will be paying property taxes. Right? If we assume Tom started paying property taxes at age 21, and will continue to pay them until he dies at 87 years of age, then Tom will have paid out (using your numbers and ratios) about $119K towards his son’s $52K cost of education. Right?

More than TWICE what that education cost! Right Keven?

Comment_arrow

Kevin Nedd

10:53 pm on Sunday, February 17, 2013

Wrong!

If you are going to take that approach then you need to account for the fact Tom has/had two kids go through the school system. That's 26 years if you count kindergarten. Lets assume assume an average of $10K a year equating to $260K worth of public education. 70% of Tom's annual $6K tax bill pays for school so he is kicking in an average of $4.2K per year. This means it would take over 61 years for Tom to lose his "freeloader" status. Not going to happen, my friend because Tom was well over 21 when he bought his house in the Township. Try again.

By the way, my name is spelled K-e-v-i-n!

That's because unlike you Tom, I like for my posts to represent the truth as much as possible.

Kevin, the reason we republicans are frustrated is not because we don't want to pay for services we receive, we just don't want to over pay for those services we receive. For 50 years Democrats have come up with new ways to buy voters, first you have to put people into classifications, then pit those classes against each other, Rich against Poor, White against Black, Union against Private sector, Women against Men, Earth against humans, etc. etc. and in some magical way, it all requires money to be extracted from someone, especially those whom need it the most, the rich don't give a crap about government, they can just leave the country or make their own. Democrats are the worst offenders when it comes to paying their fair share, they take from others, give themselves a salary, and pass through whats left to make it look like it came from them, that is why the Democrats don't want us to become rich, we wouldn't need them. True republicans understand this, not the fake republicans like we have seen the last 20 years. The Dem. party was first to be taken over by the Socialists, and slowly those Socialists have taken control of the Republican party, I mean think about it, how hard is it for a Lib to file that he is a Republican? The Tea Party is laughed at by media and both parties, but they are true republicans who want equality, but character assassination is a very powerful tool the Dems use effectively. I see no hope for where this ends, Rome is falling all over again.

even if you are correct when it comes to the current cost of education, we all know it should not cost so much to teach our children, other countries are doing far better a job with far less money to do so, but Dems need the votes of the teachers, police, fire, postal service, and all the classes they bunch us into to keep in power, and that is where your math is all wrong, I don't want to pay for education when only a quarter of what I am spending is really going towards it, I don't want to spend thousands on police and fire protection when only a hundred actually goes towards safety, etc. etc. and I certainly don't want to pay $30,000 a year for healthcare to be told I can't get a certain test done because juan went to the emergency room for a cold, and his services were paid for by the government who took it from me to begin with, just so they can get voted back into offices.
