Tom Shields Memorial Classic

On May 31, 2011, the Flanders Fire Co. #1 and Rescue Squad lost their 2nd Assistant Chief, Tom Shields.  This was the company’s first Line of Duty Death in 89 years while serving Flanders and nearby communities.

After responding to an EMS call reporting an unresponsive child, Assistant Chief Shields began to experience chest pains when he returned to the firehouse. Upon arriving home, his wife called 911 and he was transported to Saint Clare’s hospital in Denville where he subsequently passed away.

Tom started as a volunteer with emergency services in 1986 at the West Paterson Fire Department where he attained the rank of 2nd lieutenant.  In 2005, he joined the Flanders Fire Company and quickly rose to the rank of 2ndAssistant Chief.
