The courses, which are open to residents and non-residents alike, will cost $16 each for all four lectures. The money received will go to The Friends of the Washington
Township Public Library, to be used toward sponsoring future continuing education programs.

The first course, beginning Sept. 7, will be “The Supreme Court in the American Political System: Fashioning Policy and Doctrine.” It will be presented by Professor Milton Heumann, a distinguished member of the Department of Political Science at Rutgers University.

Subjects to be covered will include civil liberties, freedom of speech and the impact of Supreme Court decisions. Dr. Heumann, a graduate of Brooklyn College, holds graduate degrees from Yale University. He has served on the faculty of the University of Michigan and been a visiting lecturer and Guggenheim Fellow at the Yale Law School, and has been a member of the Rutgers faculty since 1981.

Dr. Heumann is an engaging lecturer who has won awards for his teaching prowess. He has been named “Best Teacher” by the Rutgers Review, received the Sussman Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 2011 Teaching and Mentoring Award from the Law and Courts section of the American Political Science Association. His broad
knowledge paired with a keen sense of humor make him a popular speaker. Classes in this series will run Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28.

The second course, beginning Oct. 5, will be “The Story of the Symphony,” and will be taught by Dr Robert W. Butts. He is the director of the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey and adjunct professor of music at Montclair State University
and the College of St. Elizabeth.

A distinguished musicologist and a gifted teacher, he is also a composer. He has a wide range of knowledge in all varieties of music and a natural talent for sharing that
knowledge with students as well as audiences at his concerts.

The course will follow the development of the symphonic form, beginning with Haydn and Mozart. It will continue through the Beethoven symphonies and into the Romantic period, with Mendelssohn, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. The class concludes with the symphonies of early 20th century composers, including Mahler, Sibelius and Shostakovich. Classes will run Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26.

All attendees must preregister. Class size is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. For registration forms or more information, please call the
library at 908-876-3596.
