5 Cars: Muscle Cars to Blow Your Refund On

If Uncle Sam gave you a sweet refund, here are five ways to spend it on a great new ride.

If you're like many people, you've done your duty by the tax man and have a refund check sitting in your hands. If you're the average refund recipient, you have just under $3,000 to play with, according to Bargaineering.com. And of course, being a good American, you plan to use the cash to boost the local economy, right? Well, being that this is a column concerning cars, what do you think we'd suggest you do with that windfall?

This week's 5 Cars suggests grabbing a muscle car. What's that? According to Merriam-Webster, it's one of "a group of American-made two-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving." We're talking a huge, honkin' V6 or V8 engine, rear-wheel drive, something you'd imagine Fonzie driving in a drag race.

Best of all, a muscle car can make its driver look like she or he shouldn't be messed with: These powerful, though fairly inexpensive, vehicles can make you look and feel tougher, stronger, sexier and richer than you probably are.

You know, three grand makes for a tidy down payment... And after dealing with the IRS, feeling tough while being thrifty may be exactly what the doctor ordered.

Thanks to Patchogue Patch for the muscle car idea. Listings and photos come from Cars.com, Craigslist and AOL Autos.

2. 2013 Dodge Challenger SXT - New - $27,530

From Cars.com: This monster comes in clean and mean Bright White. Like definitive musclers, it's a two-door couple with real wheel drive. It also boasts a 5-speed automatic transmission and a 3.6 liter V6 engine. Ask for Stock# SD1063.

Available at Beyer Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Morristown.

3. 2013 Chevrolet Camaro 1LT - New - $29,940

From Cars.com: Is there anything like a red-hot muscle car? This two-door couple comes in Crystal Red, has rear wheel drive and packs a powerful 3.6 liter V6 motor. And it looks sooo good. Ask for Stock# 13332.

Available at Gearhart Chevrolet in Denville.

4. 1967 Chevy Chevelle - Used - $19,000

From Craigslist: Chevrolet is legendary for its muscle car offerings, and the Chevelle is a great example. This classic four-decade-plus beauty is in excellent condition, according to the East Hanover seller. The 4-speed transmission and engine were installed in 1997 by the current owner, who said the car was purchased with 35,000 miles on it and no rust. "I did everything on this car top notch right down to the paint job," the owner wrote. "Car looks like glass and [it's] an eye catcher." And according to the seller, this Chevelle has been driven only three times since it was restored and garaged 26 years ago. Caveat emptor, of course.

5. 1966 Pontiac GTO - Used - $47,500

From Cars.com: OK, this is a little pricey, but it's a classic little GTO, which is a muscle car among muscle cars. And it's red, has 62,000 miles on it, and boasts a manual transmission and an 8-cylinder engine (not the original motor). Seller Larry of Morris County says the car is "stunning," including its undercarriage, and features its original miles, an AM/FM stereo with a hidden iPod hookup. He adds that the GTO's current market value is $64,500, so it's a relative steal too.
