Alstede Farms Opens Corn Maze, Donates to ALS

Ribbon cutting ceremony held in honor of Lou Gehrig.

Alstede Farms held its Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Friday, Sept. 14 officially opening its Lou Gehrig American Baseball Legend Corn Maze and kicking off Lou Gehrig Weekend, according to a press release from the Chester Township farm.

The farm supported the effort by donating $2 of each corn maze admission for every visitor who wore a Yankees hat, shirt or jacket.

At the ceremony Mary Ann Mertz, a representative from the ALS Association (Greater New York Chapter,) spoke about the Association, its upcoming fundraising events and the work it does, the release said.

Rachel Barber from Hackettstown spoke about her dad at the ceremony who lost his life to ALS. Audience members heard about her dad’s strength, his struggles and the bravery he exhibited in facing the terminal illness, the release said.

After the ceremony all guests were invited to explore the corn maze.

“Lou Gehrig was a true American Hero! And we are honored to have been granted permission from the Estate of Lou Gehrig to use his likeness,” said Kurt Alstede, owner of Alstede Farms.

President & CEO of the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter Dorine Gordon, stated “We applaud Alstede Farms for creating this fantastic corn maze dedicated to New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig. His love of the sport, competitive spirit, and grace in the face of adversity continues to inspire people today, over seven decades since his untimely death. We are proud to carry on the fight against the disease that bears his name and thank Alstede Farms for their generosity and for this fun tribute for all to enjoy.”

Alstede Farms Lou Gehrig American Baseball Legend Corn Maze is open every day until Thanksgiving.
