Five Things You Need to Know Before a Hurricane

With hurricane Irene making her way up the east coast and , it’s important to be aware of potential hazards and the best way to prepare for them. Here are five things you need to know before the storm hits:

You Need to Have a Plan: Ensure that everyone in your home is aware of and prepared for hurricane conditions such as strong wind, flooding, and elevated water levels. Discuss an escape route, determine a plan for evacuating children and pets, and be sure to have emergency telephone numbers nearby.

You Need Supplies: It is important to stock up on food, water, and toiletries and to have fully-charged flashlights, blankets, pillows, first aid kits, medicine, fully-charged cell phones, and cash on hand. For extra precaution, purchase sealable plastic bags to ensure that important documents are in a safe place, protected from potential water damage.

You Need to Protect Your Home: Be sure to protect all areas of your home’s exterior from wind and debris by ensuring that your roof, shutters, doors, and garage door(s) are all secure. Check to see if flood damage is covered under your insurance, as it isn’t typically covered under standard homeowner’s insurance.  

You Need to Know About Emergency Shelter: In the event that the hurricane causes major power outages, , Long Valley Fire Company, and Fairmount Fire Company will have backup power sources with clean water and bathrooms. For overnight shelter, the is Long Valley’s main emergency location.

You Need to Know What to do After a Hurricane: Avoid river banks and streams until potential flooding has passed. Also be aware of your surroundings and stay far from downed power lines and report them to the power company.
