Small Business Saturday: Shop Long Valley

See our list of participating merchants for Small Business Saturday.

Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves.

What about those mom-and-pop businesses in Washington Township and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day?

That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born.

Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website.

American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Celebrating its third year on Nov. 24, the event drew over 100 million people last year, according to the Small Business Saturday website.

Locally owned business across the country now take part in Small Business Saturday, offering their own deals to rival those offered the day before on Black Friday.

Right here in Washington Township, there are dozens of businesses participating in the effort, which we've listed below.

Determined to get any gifts that I can from our lovely local businesses this year (and throughout year of course)...how horribly unfair that they were closed for such an extended period! Shop local friends!

There is no where to shop in LV unless of course you want to buy antiques (French for old $#!@). Antique stores, the death of any downtown.

Don't forget to check out Hoffman's Supply, their store is awesome.

Tom is right, Hoffman's has a lot to offer, as does CoWorking Long Valley's permanent shops, Pie Crust Yarns and the brand new Studio Six. The Green Market will be open Sunday (tomorrow) and it's not just for vegetables and great food--there are many small business owners in the loft with a variety of goods and gifts--teas, herbs, soaps, pottery, jewelry, photography for starters. There is also the Fordyce Studio for a family portrait and the new shop in the former gas station. Check out the local businesses through the Long Valley Village Association: http://lvva.org/category/arts/ Local small businesses are all around us.
