Tutoring Center Grows as Local Students Prosper

Homework Helpers introducing new programs, bringing in extra tutors to meet demand.

It's been nearly six months since Homework Helpers of Long Valley, a tutoring center located on Schooley’s Mountain Road, opened its doors to the community.

The tutoring center, which offers homework support, tutoring for students in pre-school through college, and standardized test preparation, has become a popular resource for students in the area, and owner Josh Goodkin is pleased with the community’s response.

, Goodkin has more than doubled the number of tutors at the center to assist the growing number of students, and has brought on additional specialists in Spanish and Science to accommodate student demands.

Goodkin says he and the staff are seeing significant improvements in students' SAT scores, many of which have increased by more than 200 points, and are also seeing major progress in students’ ACT scores.

“I think our success can be attributed to both our tutors, who have such a strong passion for teaching and helping every student, and to our students, who come in ready to go, eager to ask questions and learn,” said Goodkin, a West Morris Central graduate.

“It has been so great seeing so many of our students succeeding in subjects they could never pass and receiving high test scores in their weaker subjects," Goodkin said.

Goodkin continues to introduce additional programs and events to keep the students engaged at the center.

Goodkin recently started a Pizza and Homework Program, which takes place Monday through Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. to “feed the mind and body” for students seeking extra homework help.

The Center also newly offers a Bagels and SATs program, which is held on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to give students the opportunity to take a full-length, timed SAT/ACT test while enjoying a bagel breakfast. This program has become increasingly popular for many of the students who are seeking ways to monitor standardized test progress in a realistic testing environment.

The Center will also begin College Consulting, designed to relieve students’ stress during the college search and application processes.

When it comes to future plans, “the sky is the limit,” says Goodkin. "We are constantly thinking of new programs and ideas and are especially excited about our Rewards Program, which will begin this fall.”

Goodkin hopes that the Rewards Program, which will involve gift cards and other fun prizes rewarded to students for improving in a subject, will further fuel students’ motivation and add a little bit of fun.

Homework Helpers continues to offer a variety of tutoring packages and 15 percent off initial tutoring sessions for new students. For more information, contact the tutoring center at 908-876-1776 or email J.Goodkin@homeworkhelpersoflv.com.
