Lightner family thanks community after son is named person of the year.

What a week it was as we said goodbye to 2012, for better or worse, and said hello to a new, shiny year in 2013. But holidays don’t mean the news stops, so let’s take a look at the bigger stories from the previous few days.

The annual Washington Township reorganization meeting was held Wednesday at the municipal building, and Ken Short was sworn into his fifth consecutive term, while Bill Roehrich was sworn into his second consecutive three-year term. In addition, both men were chosen by their fellow committeemen to lead the governing body.

The Washington Township School District Board of Education also held its annual reorganization this week. With former president Michael Rec no longer on the board, the group chose former vice president Cathleen Compoli to be the group’s new leader. Kathleen Koop will be the vice president. Middle Valley Bridge Project Far From Done

One of Washington Township’s biggest road projects in recent memory began in September and was expected to last up to eight months. Now in month five of work, engineers working on the bridge replacement said there would be at least another month of work ahead before completion.

While investigating a crash on Bartley Road that hit two trees with no driver around, Washington Township police found the motorist in his home, where he consented to a search of his car and bedroom. The search revealed drug paraphernalia and a sawed-off shotgun.

After a week-long nomination and voting period, Long Valley voted Glenn Lightner as its 2012 person of the year. The Lightner family was thankful for the gesture, but said it was the community that should have received the honor for their help to Glenn.
