Quick Chek Gas Station Gets by Planning Board

Representatives from the Quick Check corporation came before the Washington Township Planning Board for a concept review on a potential convenience store and gas station in town. If the company gets through the Highlands Council and Washington Township Committee, they’ll open the business at the intersection of Rt. 46 and Hearthstone Road.

Recovering Drug Addict: ‘We All Start in Same Place’

Former NBA player Chris Herren spent a night and morning speaking with West Morris Central High School students and the community at large, sharing his story of addiction and how it transformed his life. His struggles began as a teen and told listeners about the dangers of substance abuse.

Teachers ‘Shocked’ by Negotiations Impasse

Negotiations stalled before they could really begin between the West Morris Regional High School District’s school board and teacher’s association, according to representatives from the faculty’s side. Association president Joyce Hartmann spoke to the board in open session during a meeting and expressed her disappointment at the impasse.

Bullying Claim Pits Family Against School District

A Mendham High School student and her family came forward to Patch and explained a bullying claim lodged to the district was not being properly handled. What was learned and reported were claims that the student was denied a medical device and intimidated by coaches and teammates.

Fallen Long Valley Hero Honored by Community

The American Veterans Association of Washington Township hosts a Memorial Day Ceremony each year, but the 2013 event was even more significant than usual. The township named a road at Rock Spring Park after James “Jamie” Smith, a Long Valley native who was killed in action in Somalia.

Alternate Kindergarten Program Opens in Long Valley

Responding to parent’s requests of an alternative to the new full-day kindergarten program being implemented by Washington Township schools, St. Luke’s Church, which runs a preschool program, is now offering a four-hour per day kindergarten program for interested families.

The Mt. Olive community and surrounding towns were put on alert after a 13-year-old boy told police a man in a white van was trying to lure him after school one day. A few days later, it was revealed the teen’s story was completely false.
