Fallen Long Valley Hero Honored by Community

Memorial Day holds local significance during 2013 event.

On a brisk Saturday morning a crowd of more than 200 gathered at the Senior Center at Rock Spring Park, to honor the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

As a special part of the ceremony, the street where the event took place was renamed for one of those lost in battle, Cpl James 'Jamie' Smith.

The ceremony included a keynote speech by James Smith, Sr., who talked about his son, Jamie, and the Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia, of October 1993, where his son lost his life. The battle was made known to many by the movie, "Black Hawk Down."
