Week in Review: Major Decisions Made in LV

Week ends with tragedy in Chester Twp.

We’re now more than halfway through December and the only snow we’ve seen this season fell in October–go figure. It was another news-filled week in town, so if you’re interested in seeing all that went on, go here.

The week began with an in-depth look at outgoing assistant principal Gil Moscatello, who is retiring from his 40-plus year career at West Morris Central High School. Moscatello went from classroom teacher to administrator, and had his hands in just about everything the school did. .

The West Morris Regional Board of Education approved the retirement of Superintendent Anthony di Battista Monday night, and supporters from surrounding communities, including educators and administrators, spoke about the school chief’s tenure in the district.

At the same meeting, the board began its search for a new superintendent. The nine members discussed the use of a consultant to help filter resumes and conduct reference checks, which was approved. As the meeting wore on, residents from the district’s municipalities took aim at board member Jamie Button, alleging he was part of the reason for di Battista’s retirement.

The Washington Township Committee held its final work session of 2011, and in doing so decided it would introduce and approve a resolution to reduce the IT department’s hours. . The governing body also mulled the possibility of video taping and posting . And we want to know if you think that’s a good idea. .

Road repair and construction seems to be a constant lately in Washington Township after a few months of bizarre weather. But, even without snow or floods, accidents still happen. The stone bridge at the northern end of Schooley’s Mountain Road underwent repairs after a car crashed into it earlier this month. A 10-foot section was barricaded off while crews worked to fix the historic bridge. .

As the week came to a close, tragic news came out of neighboring Chester Township when it was learned that a 74-year old man beat and killed his wife in the couple’s home. An affidavit was released by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office with details of how the event unfolded. .
