New 'Hobbit' Film Premieres at Area BowTie Cinemas Thursday

When we last left Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves, they were just about to encounter the fearsome dragon Smaug. What happens next will be revealed in special midnight shows.

This certainly is good news if you are a fan of Tolkien-inspired cinema: "The Desolation of Smaug," the much-anticipated second part of the trilogy film director Peter Jackson has created from J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" prequel "The Hobbit," is coming to area BowTie Cinemas Thursday for a midnight premiere. And it's coming in a big way—in marathon form, preceded by Jackson's first crack at the story of Bilbo Baggins, 2012's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

Four BowTie Cinemas in the area will screen the two-film marathon beginning Thursday, with "The Hobbit" starting at 8 p.m. and "The Desolation of Smaug" having its first regional screening at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

The new film stars Martin Freeman as Baggins, Sir Ian MacKellan as powerful wizard Gandalf the Grey, Andy Sirkas as Gollum/Smeagol and some wondrous CGI magic as the dragon named in the title. (And will comedian and noted Tolkien brainiac Stephen Colbert show up in this film or in the still-forthcoming third installment? Middle Earth fans will have to wait and see.)

You can see the marathon at the following BowTie theaters:

  • Mansfield Cinema 14, Hackettstown, 1965 Route 57
  • Kinnelon 8,  Kinnelon, 25 Kinnelon Road
  • Parsippany Cinema 12, Parsippany, 3165 Route 46
  • Succasunna Cinema 10, Roxbury Twp., 21 Sunset Strip

The ticket price to see the pair of films is $17 per person. For more info, contact BowTie Cinemas at 203-659-2600.
