Chester 5K to Honor, Benefit Local Heroes

Re/Max Heritage Properties giving back to new home community.

When Re/Max Heritage Properties of Flanders took the major step of opening an office on Main Street in Chester, the first thing the company wanted to do was give back and thank the community for its acceptance.

From that mindset was borne the idea to honor heroes both locally and nationally, which employees of the real estate company will do on Saturday in the heart of Chester.

Kicking off on Main Street on Saturday, a 5K Run for Heroes will wind its way through Chester Borough’s streets, raising money for the Chester Police Benevolence Association, Chester First Aid Squad, Chester Fire Department, and Operation Jersey Cares, a non-profit organization that sends care packages to troops overseas.

It’s the latter group that hits home for the event’s brain trust and Re/Max agent Tami Abrusci, whose son, Sean, spent seven months in Afghanistan as a Marine.

“As soon as he settled (in Afghanistan), he was receiving packages from Jersey Cares,” Abrusci said. “It’s an amazing organization and we want to support them as much as possible.”

Proceeds from the event will be dispersed equally to the four groups, Abrusci said.

The company didn’t venture into this event alone, either, Abrusci said.

“The town has just been so helpful,” she said about Chester Borough. “It’s amazing how many people have supported this effort and will be taking part.”

Kicking off the 5K run/walk and 1-mile fun walk will be the Marine Color Guard, and singing of the National Anthem.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. (or in advance at www.bestrace.com), with walkers hitting the course at 8:30 a.m. The 5K event will cross the starting line at 9:15 a.m., followed by a post-run party with awards.

Cost is $25 in advance or $30 on the day of the event.  Care package donations will be accepted at the race for troops as well.
