Former Daily Record Editor, Vietnam Vet Dies at 66

John Hatch grew up in Convent Station, lived in Long Valley and owned a business in Chester.

John Hatch may have known Morris County better than most.

The Long Valley resident grew up in Convent Station and graduated Morristown Prep. He owned a business in Chester and spent time as the Daily Record newspaper’s Executive Editor.

Hatch died at the age of 66 in Chatham on Feb. 5.

After attending the University of South Carolina for two years, Hatch served in the United States Marine Corps in 1968 and 1969 fighting in Vietnam, according to his obituary.

Hatch was the owner of Country Gallery in Chester, and his work can be seen in several local businesses. Before becoming an entrepreneur, Hatch was a sportswriter for the county’s newspaper and rose to the level of executive editor.

Hatch is survived by his wife, Martha, of 42 years; a son; a daughter; and three grandchildren.
