What's the Right Age for Swimming Lessons?

Long Valley Patch wants your opinion.

Editor's Note: This topic was originally posted on Monday, May 2, but due to breaking news and extenuating circumstances, it became hidden on the site fairly quickly. For those reasons, we are bringing the question back for this week's Moms Talk Q&A column.

Every week Long Valley Patch is beginning a new discussion that will help parents speak to other parents in town about situations that arise while raising kids.

Now that the weather is warming up and summer is just around the corner, swimming season is just around the corner. This week, Long Valley Patch wants to know what age do you feel is appropriate to take the water wings off and give your children swimming lessons? Do you have them trained in a facility or group environment by professionals, or do you teach them yourself?

Make sure you explain your answers in the comments section below this article, and thanks for participating!

Don't make the same mistake I did~ I waited too long and now I have 2 older kids who are just now swimming independently and somewhat confidently. I think formal instruction is key! If you have a backyard pool, it's smart to do some formal lessons, but if the parents are strong swimmers, they can also do a good job instructing kids on safety and the basic strokes, etc..
