Boy, 11, Falls 20 Feet, Strikes Tree in Mt. Olive Sledding Accident

Child was alert and conscious after falling down retaining wall, police said.

An 11-year-old boy fell down a retaining wall at least 20 feet and struck a treet during a sledding accident Tuesday afternoon at the Woodfield Estates in Mount Olive, police said.

The boy was in a prone position on the sled and likely slid beneath a fence, falling about 20 to 25 feet down a retaining wall and striking a tree at about 1 p.m., police said. Witnesses told police the boy may have hit a bump that prevented him from stopping in time.

The boy was alert and conscious when Mt. Olive Police Officer Casey Grimm arrived, police said. The boy was transported to Morristown Medical Center. His condition was not immediately known Tuesday evening.

"Although he was conscious and crying, he was transported to a hospital for an evaluation for head trauma and internal injuries, we are all hoping for the best," Mt. Olive Police Chief Mark Spitzer said.

Wishing him a speedy recovery. I have an 11-year old myself and this story really hits home.
