Cops Issue 323 Tickets in Seatbelt Crackdown

Washington Twp. police arrest 25 during two-week time frame.

The Washington Township Police Department issued 323 summonses between Monday, May 23 and midnight on Sunday, June 5, during the , according to Washington Township Police Sgt. Doug Compton.

Compton, who serves as the department’s Click It or Ticket project director, received word at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 20 that the department would be allotted the $4,000 federal grant to pay officers overtime funds to add personnel to the patrol units.

Of the 323 summonses issued, 199 were for failure to wear a seatbelt, which was 16 more than in 2010, Compton said. Overall, though, the number of summonses was down 88 from the previous year’s campaign.

“I think that’s a staffing issue on our side,” Compton said. “Last year we were able to have guys sitting out and focusing on this more heavily. This year, though, all summonses were issued during roving patrols. No one was stationery.”

Included in the grand total were 25 arrests, consisting of four DWIs; four controlled dangerous substance arrests; eight underage drinking arrests, seven contempt of court/warrant arrests; one for harassment and one for simple assault.
