Man Stabbed Table, Swung at Officer, Police Say

A Long Valley resident allegedly became disorderly over the weekend at Valley Restaurant.

A Long Valley man was arrested after he allegedly tried hitting a officer at , Lt. Doug Compton said.

Sgt. Jeffrey Almer responded to the business just after midnight Sunday when an employee of the restaurant told police there was a disorderly individual at the business, Compton said.

The caller told police that Matthew Berg, 42, stabbed a table with a knife at the restaurant, was currently in the parking lot, and preparing to go back in, Compton said.

When Almer arrived, he approached Berg from behind, who at the time was arguing with patrons of the restaurant, Compton said. Berg attempted to hit Almer and was unsuccessful, Compton said.

Berg was ordered to the ground and handcuffed, Compton said. It is unknown if Berg was in possession of a weapon at the time of the arrest, Compton said.

Berg was charged with possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and aggravated assault on an officer.

Berg was at the restaurant consuming alcoholic beverages, Compton said. He wa placed in the Morris County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Assisting officers at the scene were Cpl. Brian Bigham, Officer Cory Lee, and Officer Michael Hade, along with officer from the Chester Township Police.

Almer did not sustain any injuries in the incident, Compton said.
