Dead Body Pulled From River in Hackettstown

Police discover body in Musconetcong River behind Shell gas station.

A dead body was pulled from the Musconetcong River behind the Shell gas station on Route 57 in Hackettstown around 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Washington Township Police responded to the scene just after 11 a.m. when owners from Greenway Flowers reported what appeared to be a partially submerged human body midstream, Lt. Mark Niemynski said.

Police officers from Washington Township and Hackettstown observed a body that was wedged in a log jam, Niemynski said.

The Budd Lake Fire Company Water Rescue Team pulled the body from the water.

The body has not yet been identified and the incident is currently under investigation, Niemynski said.

Washington Township police officer Adam Feichter, Sgt. Jeffrey Almer, Det. Sgt. Chris Bratus, and Det. Thomas Felleni assisted at the scene.

Washington Township Police, Hackettstown Police, the Budd Lake Fire Department, and Long Valley Fire Department all responded to the scene.

This is a breaking news story. Keep checking back with Patch as more information becomes available.

about 3-4 days ago there were a bunch of police in the woods behind my house... and behind Manhires eye doc, they said a man was seen running down the street completely nude from the waist down, they suspected he was under the influence of a strong substance, they said he was last seen running through my back yard into the woods towards the river... they never found him... i told the officers they should check the river, they said if hes in the river there was nothing they could do until he or his body was found... quite possibly this is the same man, stay off the drugs kids.' The river does flow towards 57 from here, and the water was cold enough for hypothermia to set in rather fast especially if naked, also the current was too strong to swim, especially since it was dark and he was possibly UTI, if he had fallen into the river it was dark and he would hae been confused. we shall know soon enough, a tox screen and lack of pants would tell us,... not trying to be funny just info i have..

It is odd they don't mention if its male or female in the article. Hopefully they will solve the case quickly and give a report back. LV is always so hush hush on these things and don't usually provide information back when its a big story

Thanks for the comment, Joanne. Local authorities would not divulge any identification details until the medical examiner's office completed its report on the body. Once we have information, though, we'll be sure to let the readers know.
