Elderly Man Crashed Car Into Tree, Cops Say

Couple taken to hospital to be evaluated for chest pains, police report.

An elderly Belvidere couple was taken to the hospital after crashing into a tree in Hastings Square Monday morning, Washington Township Police Lt. Art Adams said.

Just after 10 a.m. Officer John Wurtemberg responded to office building at 488 Hastings Square for a report of motor vehicle crash, Adams said. When Wurtemberg got to the scene, he found Frederick Kling, 89, had stepped on the gas pedal rather than the brake when attempting to park his vehicle, Adams said.

In doing so, the vehicle drove through the parking space, jumped the curb, and struck a tree next to building 1A, Adams said.

The vehicle sustained front-end damage and required being towed from the scene, Adams said. Both Kling and his passenger, June Kling, 82, were taken to Hackettstown Regional Medical Center by the Long Valley First Aid Squad to be evaluated for chest pains.

No charges were pressed as a result of the crash.
