Fire Overtakes Vehicle in Hastings Square Complex

Blaze began around 4:30 p.m.

A car fire on Knob Hill Road in Hastings Square on Thursday afternoon required the Schooley's Mountain Fire Protection Association and Fairmount Fire Company to respond and extinguish the blaze.

A driver and passenger in a 1996 Pontiac minivan pulled over to the side of the road after experiencing mechanical issues, Washington Township Police Lt. Mark Nymienski said.

When the vehicle's occupants exited, they noticed a fire had begun under the car, and a trail of fluids had spread on the road before the blaze began, Niemynski said.

The fire from the vehicle caused damage to the roadway and nearby trees, Niemynski said.

Once the fire was put out, all that remained was a charred shell of the vehicle.

All three of Washington Township's fire companies responded to the blaze, in addition to the Long Valley First Aid Squad and Morris County Hazmat Team.

There were no injuries as a result of the blaze, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, Niemynski said.
