Long Valley Man Busted With Heroin, Needles at Home, Cops Say

26-year-old was allegedly high when police showed up Wednesday night, report says.

A Long Valley man was arrested in his home for being under the influence of heroin and being in possession of the drug, Washington Township police reported.

Officer John Lee responded to a home on Fairview Avenue at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night for a report of a man at the house under the influence of drugs, Lt. Mark Niemynski said.

When Lee arrived, he found Steven Averett, 26, who lives at the house, Niemynski said. Averett was “clearly impaired” and admitted to Lee he had taken heroin, Niemynski said.

Averett also gave the officers on patrol a bag of hypodermic needles, and was subsequently placed under arrest.

When Averett was taken to police headquarters for processing, officers found multiple folds of heroin secreted in his pants pocket, Niemynski said. Averett was charged with possession of heroin, being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, and possession of hypodermic needles.

Averett was unable to post bail and was lodged in Morris County Correctional Facility.
