Four days after residents heard a loud explosion in the middle of the night, authorities are quiet on details and neighbors are left still wondering.
Local and county agencies, including the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, sheriff’s office, bomb squad and Washington Township Police were in the area of Naughright Road and Acorn Drive late Thursday searching the area, multiple residents said.
As of Monday, First Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Zelante told Patch an investigation is ongoing and no details were yet released.
“I heard an explosion at exactly 3:36 a.m.,” said resident John Sirico, who lives in the area. “It woke me up out of a sound sleep. It was definitely an explosion… not a firecracker nor was it thunder. This was loud!”
Residents in the area reported seeing more than a half dozen SUVs and Crown Victoria vehicles belonging to authorities Thursday afternoon, many of whom were looking for items on the ground.
“What I heard was a single, loud boom,” said resident Meg Bracelin. “I did see several law enforcement vehicles parked on the side of the road, including a Morris County Sheriff’s vehicle. There were about a dozen or so people in the vicinity at the edge of the woods.”
Bracelin said no on else in her home or any of the neighbors she spoke to heard the sound, and hadn’t heard anything suspicious.
Patch reader “Hookerman” said his view of the scene Thursday afternoon was similar to those living in the area.
“When I was driving home on Naughright late Thursday afternoon, I saw a bunch of police cars and a sheriff unit parked on the road, and a bunch of officials were walking around with their noses to the ground searching for something.”
Another Patch reader, “Joanne,” speculated about the explosion’s genesis.
“Its possible that it was an explosion in one of the mine shafts underground, they have happened before in that area,” the comment read. “Have they checked the old mining maps?? I've lived up here for almost 30 years, they are not as uncommon as you think......”
On Friday, Zelante said he believed there was no threat to the community.
Patch is following this story and will update with details as they become available.
