Man Gets 8 Years For Bank Robberies

Hackettstown Chase Among the 5 locations he hit.

A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for robbing five Northern New Jersey banks across over a six weeks. Among those hit was the Chase Bank in Hackettstown.

Joseph Pennello of Washington, Warren County previously pleaded guilty to five counts of bank robbery at institutions spanning three different counties, according to the U.S. District Attorney Paul Fishman.

Pennello turned himself over to law enforcement on March 12, and has been in custody every since, Fishman said. The five banks Pennello admitting robbing are:

  • PNC Bank in Washington (Warren County), in the amount of $2,279 on Jan. 29.
  • TD Bank in Scotch Plains, in the amount of $2,810 on Feb. 6.
  • PNC Bank in Hackensack in the amount of $3,335 on Feb. 11.
  • Chase Bank in Hackettstown in the amount of $8,531 on Feb. 18.
  • Wells Fargo Bank in Rutherford in the amount of $1,099 on March 10.

In addition to the eight-year sentence, Judge Joel Pisano sentenced Pennello to three years of supervised release and ordered him to pay $18,054 in restitution, Fishman said.
