A Long Valley man attempted running from police when authorities tried arresting him for driving while intoxicated, said.
Officer Adam Feichter stopped Frederick Scharnikow, 54, just after midnight on Sept. 7 for a motor vehicle violation, Lt. Doug Compton said.
When Feichter spoke with the driver, he smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from Scharnikow, Compton said, and requested the man complete field sobriety tests.
Scharnikow subsequently failed the field sobriety tests, Compton said. Feichter then began placing Scharnikow under arrest, but he began arguing and attempted to run away, Compton said.
Feichter regained control of Scharnikow and was eventually placed under arrest, Compton said.
Scharnikow was charged with obstruction of law, driving while intoxicated, failure to stop, driving while suspended, reckless driving, and maintenance of lamps.
