Loaded Shotgun Found in Newton Man's Vehicle on Route 517, Police Say

Police said Jeffrey Ort has a domestic violence order that prohibits him from possessing and receiving firearms.

A Newton man who was pulled over Saturday for a motor vehicle violation had a loaded shotgun on his backseat, Hackettstown Police said.

Jeffrey Ort, 45, was charged with third-degree violating a domestic violence order, transporting a weapon improperly, possessing less than 50 grams of marijuana, having a controlled substance in a motor vehicle, having an expired and failure to stop at a red light.

According to Hackettstown Police, Ort was pulled over on Route 517 just after 5 p.m. Saturday for a moving violation. As the officer approached the driver, he saw shotgun shells on the floor of the vehicle, the statement said,

Police found a loaded 20-gauge shotgun in the backseat and less than 50 grams of marijuana in the vehicle, according to the report.

Police also discovered Ort had a domestic violence order that prohibits him from possessing and receiving any firearms.

Ort was arrested and later released after posting $5,000 bail.
