Six children and one elderly woman were taken to Hackettstown Regional Medical Tuesday morning after a school bus was rear-ended, Hackettstown Police Det. Darren Tynan said.
Dorothea Burrows, 96, of Independence Township was driving on Rt. 46 in Hackettstown when she struck the back of a Hackettstown School District bus, Tynan said.
The bus was stopped in the road, and driver Luis Figueroa, 46, of Dover, was preparing to make a left turn, Tynan said. Burrows told police she attempted to stop the car, but her brakes did not work, Tynan said.
There were nine children on the bus and one aide in addition to Figueroa, Tynan said. One child was released to a parent at the scene, and six others were taken to the hospital for precautionary measures, Tynan said. A six-year-old child suffered a hand and leg injury, and a seven-year-old was treated for a knee injury, Tynan said.
Burrows did not receive any traffic violations at the scene, Tynan said.
Assisting at the scene was the Hackettstown Fire Department, Hackettstown Rescue Squad, Mansfield Township Rescue Squad, Independence Township Rescue Squad, Allamuchy Rescue Squad and the Hackettstown Office Of Emergency Management.
