Washington Township Police Celebrate 50 Years of Service

Department will hold a ceremony in September to mark the milestone.

The Washington Township Police Department will celebrate 50 years of service with a ceremony in September.

The department began in 1964 with two full-time officers. Prior to 1964, the town was served by a volunteer police force and the State Police. But the town's rising population spurred the need for its own police department.

There are now 28 sworn members and three civilian employees of the department that serve Washington Township and Califon.

The anniversary ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13 at 3 p.m. and will be held rain or shine. The event will include a formal presentation and a tour of the department, according to a department statement. Presentations and demonstrations will also be conducted.
