Newburgh Rd. Bridge to Close For Two Weeks

Barrier repairs to be made by Morris County Engineering.

The Newburgh Road bridge connecting Washington Township to Hackettstown will be closed to through traffic for a minimum of two weeks for repairs, according to Washington Township Police Sgt. Doug Compton.

Morris County Engineering will be replacing barriers on both sides of the bridge to help maintain structural support until the bridge is .

The work is scheduled to begin Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 9 a.m. and will last two weeks, Compton said. If the area succumbs to inclement weather during that time frame, it could greatly hamper the duration of the project, Compton said.

“A lot of the work will be done from beneath the bridge,” Compton said. “So if the (Musconetcong) river rises as it has done recently, it’s going to slow it down greatly.”

Newburgh Road will only be open for residents and employees of businesses on the road.

Signage for weight restrictions on the bridge are already in place, Compton said, but the township is working on message boards from the county set up in both directions on Schooley’s Mountain Road to help drivers.
