Twp. Moves $250K Between Housing Funds

Committee calls special meeting to pour a quarter-million dollars into special needs fund.

In a special meeting called for Monday, June 24, the Washington Township Committee took a preemptive strike against a possible state mandate and transferred $250,000 between funds.

Now that the state has approved its budget, the township anticipates a mandated amount of funds would be claimed for affordable housing, according to Acting Administrator Andrew Coppola.

The governing body approved a resolution to transfer of $250,000 from the Municipal Affordable Housing Trust Fund to the Special Needs Housing Partnership.

The affordable housing trust fund initially had $570,000, Coppola said.

Coppola said the township anticipates the state will require each municipality to commit funds for affordable housing obligations, and that was the reason for the meeting.

Funds were allocated to the Special Needs Housing Partnership fund, in part, because the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency matches monies used in that account, Coppola said.

Parties interested in creating special needs housing in the township can apply through the state for a portion of the funding. The township would then endorse the applicant where applicable.
