MORRIS & SUSSEX COUNTIES, NJ – September 19, 2012 – Saint Clare’s Hospitals in Denville, Dover and Sussex, the acute care hospitals of Saint Clare’s Health System, ranked among the top hospitals in the nation in the Joint Commission’s Top Performers of Key Quality Measures ™ in a report released today, September 19, by The Joint Commission.  Saint Clare’s Hospitals in Denville and Dover were recognized for the treatment of Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Pneumonia and Surgical Care, and Saint Clare’s Hospital in Sussex was noted for treatment of Pneumonia.

The recognition placed Saint Clare’s in the top 620 out of more than 3,300 hospitals nationwide, as well as noted Saint Clare’s locations (Denville/Dover and Sussex) of only 14 total hospitals recognized in the State of New Jersey.  Additionally, Saint Clare’s in Denville, Dover and Sussex were the only hospitals recognized in Morris and Sussex Counties in New Jersey.

“We are extremely proud of the work done by our physicians, nurses and the entire staff throughout Saint Clare’s Health System,” said Leslie D. Hirsch, FACHE, president and chief executive officer of Saint Clare’s Health System. “This report is a validation of our efforts at our acute care hospitals in Denville, Dover and Sussex to provide high-quality healthcare for the people in our community, as well as our ongoing commitment to continuous quality improvement.”

“Saint Clare’s Hospital, including its physicians and staff, work diligently to ensure that our patients receive the highest quality care, using clinical measures that are evidence-based medicine,” said Murray Las, M.D., president of the Medical Staff at Saint Clare’s Health System.  “By consistently following rigorous standards and monitoring quality outcomes, Saint Clare’s is able to provide high-quality patient care and safety for each of our patients.”

Launched in September 2011, The Joint Commission’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures™ program recognizes accredited hospitals that attain excellence on accountability measure performance. The program is based on data reported about evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to be the best treatments for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, inpatient psychiatric services, stroke and venous thromboembolism.  This year, more than 3,300 hospitals contributed data. Of the 620 hospitals recognized, Saint Clare’s is the only system recognized in both Morris and Sussex counties being recognized. This represents the top 18 percent of Joint Commission-accredited hospitals that report core measure performance data.

A recognized hospital must first achieve performance of 95 percent or above on a single, composite score that includes all the accountability measures for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, including measures that had fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients. Second, the hospital also must meet a 95 percent performance target for every accountability measure for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, excluding any measures with fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients.
