Do You Want Armed Guards In Local Schools?

Does beefed up security in your child's classroom mean the need for a gun?

We've asked before, we're asking now, and chances are we'll be asking again.

But the topic isn't going away any time soon, and we'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

Nearing a year since the unimaginable tragedy that unfolded in Newtown, Conn., the country has seen numerous school shootings in the past few weeks and a seemingly revolving door of threats at schools of all levels.

Locally, the West Morris Regional High School District is currently undergoing a security threat analysis by a former New Jersey State Trooper, and has heard from some parents the desire for beefed up security – including the need for an armed guard.

The Washington Township School district added more than $300,000 to its budget for the 2013-14 school year to enhance security as well, including new security cameras and the building of "welcome vestibules" for visitors.

So, Patch readers, do you think your local school should have a guard, facility monitor, police officer – anyone with security experience – carrying a weapon in and around the school? Why? Why not?
