School Will Be in Session on National Holidays in 2012

To make up for emergency closing days already used, board approves using national holidays in early 2012.

Elementary and Middle School students in Washington Township will be expected to attend school on Martin Luther King Day, and the two days normally alloted for Washington's Birthday or President's Day in early 2012 to make up for the emergency closing days that have already been used in early September and October of this year.

The Washington Township Board of Education decided at its Nov. 15, 2011 meeting to utilize the national holidays to ensure that the district meets the required 180 school days per year without having to extend classes too far into late June.

"We want to promote greater educational continuity during the winter months. We know that in all likelihood there are going to be more school closings during the winter. The changes made to the calendar will certainly help provide the continuity we are seeking," said Jeffrey Mohre, Superintendent.
