Pendergrast was one of di Battista’s students in the early 1980s at Mendham High School, and, like di Battista, went on to become a history teacher before an administrator.

“Anthony got the big things right,” Pendergrast said. “He has been a visionary in this district, and he’s been a great inspiration to me.”

“Anthony has the passion and love for what he did,” Pendergrast said. “And I thank you very much.”

di Battista received a standing ovation from the crowd of approximately 50 teachers and residents at the meeting.

Pendergrast went on to thank the board for choosing him to be the district’s next superintendent, and for trusting him with the position.

“I believe this district is poised for great progress,” Pendergrast said. “I’m eager to get to work, and I’m looking forward to continuing to build relationships.”

Pendergrast will assume his duties on Wednesday, March 1.
