'Satellite' Dishes Out Spelling Bee Title at Annual Twp. Event

53 contestants battle through 24 grueling rounds before winner is crowned.

It took 24 rounds of brain-tickling action, but a winner was crowned in the 12th annual Long Valley Junior Women’s Club Spelling Bee Championship.

Herschelle Bumrah correctly remembered the word “satellite” has two “l” letters in the middle and spelled the word correctly, topping 53 other contestants from the township’s fourth and fifth grade classes.

The top three finishers will now compete in the regional spelling bee on March 2 at Park Ridge High School. The top three finishers from that competition will go on to the State Bee in New Brunswick on March 8.

Long Valley Junior Woman’s Club Spelling Bee event chairperson Alexis Antonov led the Bee, assisted by Long Valley Middle School principal Mark Ippolito, who served as the word pronouncer and definition provider.

The Club is a volunteer organization that coordinates the C.A.R.E. program, Spelling Bee, Science Fair, and Summer Read-a-Thon among other events.
