Schools, Libraries to Host Vets in November

Speaking engagements and flag-raising ceremonies throughout the month.

November, home to one of the most important days for United States armed forces commemorating former soldiers on Veterans’ Day, will be a busy time for local veterans participating in various events.

The American Veterans Association of Washington Township, Post 1776, will display veterans’ memorabilia dating from World War II to present day conflicts in Iran and Afghanistan at the Washington Township Library from Nov. 1 to 30.

On Nov. 2, the veterans’ Living History group, along with history club from the Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem, New York, will host the annual group lunch at West Morris Central High School. The group will hear soldiers' tales from World War II to 2012 by AVAWT members.

Old Farmers Road School will host members of the AVAWT for its annual flag raising ceremony and student concert on Nov. 6 at 9 a.m. Parents and residents are welcomed to attend.

Flocktown-Kossmann School will follow suit and host members of the AVAWT on Nov. 15 for its own flag raising ceremony and Living History presentation beginning at 9 a.m.

The Washington Township Historical Society will host Forrest Burgener, Post 1776’s adjutant and member of the Company of Military Historians (West Point Chapter) for a presentation on Spies: Major John Andre, General Benedict Arnold, and Margaret “Peggy” Shippen.

The Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) will host Burgener at the Hackettstown American Legion Hall on Willow Grove Street for a presentation of “The Capture, Trial, and Execution of British Major (and Spy Master) John Andre in 1970.”
